  Windows 7 Beta: Quick Review
Time: 22:09 EST/03:09 GMT | News Source: Neowin | Posted By: Robert Stein

Our friends at Neowin posted a quick review..."The installation was very simple and it just took 20 minutes. It was a hassle free installation. The thing which surprised me was that Windows 7 had installed most of the drivers for my PC, unlike in Vista where I had to insert manufacturer's disc to install drivers. This saved a lot of time to get started with Windows 7! "

Been using Win 7 for a few hours. Truth be told it kinda, sorta reminds me of Vista.

Advantages? I dunno? Lloyd? Anyone?

Right quick:

1) The new task bar grows on you pretty quick - yes you can move around among apps very quickly - hover, look at the preview bar, roll between them and watch the screen change.
2) It is fast. The scheduler, memory manager, the network stack, etc.. have all been tuned.
3) Win7 WEI favors burst speed - so don't freak when your WEI score drops - you can wait till they tune it, or clear the checkbox in the device manager disc drive under the policies tab to enable write back caching and run the WEI tests again - set it back again and reboot.
4) You can customize the living daylights out of how it looks - and save the configs.
5) DO NOT do as Paul Thurrott suggests and jack with the task bar - hang in there for a day or two and use it as it was designed - you won't regret it.
6) The Action Center is most cool - use it to manage backup, security, etc...
7) Make use of the "Credential Manager" in the control panel - it is very nice and a big step up from managing network passwords in Vista/XP
8) I love the virtuialization of the named space the most!!! Go nuts adding things to different libraries in the fly.... any object can be a member of any library - so organizing things by re-using them is very easy and powerful.
9) Live MESH Users... what can I say... you'll have nasty black borders until they patch unless you uninstall MESH - sucks, I know and they have no excuse... are they really that far apart????
10) UAC, for those that had a beef, is tuned and works - leave it at the defaults.
11) IE 8 is much improved over its BETA. It is fast, renders well and looks nice.
12) Device Stage is a great idea and has potential, but it will be a long time before many partners use it - if ever.
13) Media Player 12 is most awesome - it's the player I've always wanted in Vista
14) Media Center is improved, but needs Media Room now!
15) Play to is cool - click play to "xbox" will be amazing
16) Explorer is really nice - "Include In" library options really impress me - very useful.
17) "Default Location" is going to be loved, bit never reported on - hint... your machine is now location aware!
18) Networking is very refined; the best I have ever seen. Advanced sharing properties make things clear.
19) Management is better than ever; clearer.
20) Amazingly reliable and you can kill a specific IE thread easily without losing your session.

I have a ton more, but that is is for now. They've done such a nice job here. Hang in there with the new task bar. It takes a bit to get to know it, but it really is helpful.

Windows 7 will recommend AV. Kaspersky, Norton, or AVG - each have a version for 7.

Norton, while fast and effective and installed with custom settings, still peppered the machine with too much... too much I don't want.

Kaspersky's 7 BETA resulted in stop errors KL1.SYS - uninstall it and try another....

AVG... never been a fan... never will be. It's grown a lot and misses more and more....

Since my network has edge and perimeter based scanners and all our mail is scanned 4x before it even hits the server... I am, for the first time... gonna fly nekked. The machine won't travel and I do run as a standard user and I do not go to places on the net my wife would laugh at me for visiting. For most skilled people, I'd consider doing the same - provided you run as a standard user.

- Agreed It is very fast, much faster than Vista, at least here.
- this is just my personal opinion but I love Virtual Folders; killing them in Vista was a big mistake.
- yes, it is a pity that there are issues with MESH but W7 is in Beta stage so......
- UAC was not a big issue before so it is less than ever now.
- File transfer speed has been consistently improved
- Although I personally consider this almost irrilevant at this stage, the build is extremely stable, more
a RC than a Beta.
- Superbar: It is not a Copernican Revolution, it has it usefulness and MS could get away with it in W7;still a complete overhaul of the UI paradigm is overdue and they will have to deal with it. Personally I use the Superbar with bigger icons on the Tablet, 12 inches screen, and with smaller ones on the desktop, 22 inches screen.
- Perfect Disk 10 and NOD 32 V4 Beta run smoothly on WM 7 Ultimate both 32 and 64, as well as Kasperky retail.
- Agreed Media Player is the best ever.

Overall is a very good OS and I am sure it will sell well as far as the product itself is concerned.

Is there any reaon why the n is changed to m when writing here?

I forgot: battery life has improved tremendously. Much better power management that Vista I presume.

I have to say that I am very impressed with Windows 7. I loaded it on my laptop and it is extremely stable. It feels a little quicker than Vista but I always liked Vista myself and felt it ran fast on new hardware with suitable amounts of ram. UAC is way less intrusive so hopefully people will keep it running to get the benefits. Battery life is also improved. I didn't do a drain test but i would guess it is 10-20 percent better than Vista. This alone will mean W7 will become my primary OS on my laptop on release. I was contemplating running the beta full time but a few bugs caused me to rethink this - Live Mesh issue for example.

Oh my... try 7 on a new i7 and hang onto your hats! Seems NUMA and other parallel processing advancements have been meaningful. I know we're a long way off from the potential, but golly, 7 is blisteringly fast on the i7. Scary fast.

Has anyone found Workspaces and the Workspaces Control Center? (Virtual desktops)

I love multi-monitor support in RDP (I have R2 beta running at work).

Burning iso's worked fine.

I like the new Taskbar. I think at work with 2 x 24" monitors and dozens of windows open it will be even more useful.

#9 By 92283 (70.67.2.125) at 1/11/2009 12:03:36 PM
McAfee 8.7i installs in compatibility mode on the x64 version of Win7.

I like right clicking on the IE icon on the taskbar (when it isn't running) and getting the History.

I've spent the past several hours testing as wide a variety of anti-virus and security products as possible. None are satisfactory.

I want to be as clear as I can, and hope that both Microsoft and the security companies read this site: All of your products are garbage. Pure garbage that exists as a parasite does - feeding in this case on the misfortune of the innocent and driven by the greed of evil people. Microsoft cannot quickly enough ship their new free anti-virus ONLY client product.
With the Windows Integrity Mechanism and all that it is and does; with the Windows Firewall, Defender, Protected Mode, Securable Objects, the UIPI broker, UAC and a dash of common sense, it is my sincerest hope that the security companies and the parasitical trash they produce are crushed into financial powder.

I mean, think about it... these companies benefit from the pain and misfortune experienced by the innocent. It is time it ended and we moved on. Even the once great ESET NOD32 is pure trash now - heavier, intrusive and in the way. It must stop and we must all stop buying into this. I hope that with Windows 7 it will finally be time for a new age - one free of these parasites. Microsoft carries the responsibility to secure their software. They are doing that in so many great ways - layers of appropriate security and checking that does not snuff the life out of a computer. The security companies have built platforms and tending their many applications modules is insane. Finally, as we do, every email provider must scan all in and out-bound traffic by law. If they are to host, they should be scanning using at least three different layers. Let's hope Windows 7 ends all this for good.

Why am I having a Vista flashback?

#12 By 23275 (24.196.4.141) at 1/11/2009 4:22:36 PM
#11, or a Windows 1, 2, 3, 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, Me, 2K, XP, XP SP2, flashback...?

All 2 to 3 years betwen releases, with the sole exception of Vista, induced by the security triad of 03 that resulted in the re-set and the gap that created the perceptions all of us, to some extent, now have... that Windows releases are either too slow... or too fast and the next one simultaneously fixes everything as it breaks it... that flashback?

Candidly, in any engineering field, it is all very common... you just finish up one generation and before anyone is used to it, you're preparing for the next. We're not alone... medical imaging, communications, aerospace, etc... they are all similar. Out with the old and in with the new and against very familiar steps. Occasionally, there are big steps.. Vista was certainly one... but so were pressurized cabins, antibiotics, tooth sealants and television... oh and refrigeration... that one was huge...

#13 By 143 (96.28.64.17) at 1/12/2009 9:19:13 PM
The Vista flashback I'm getting is when Vista was reported to be the best of the best and faster speeds.

Now, here we all are seeing similar reports on "Windows 7" being the best of the best and speeds...

"On these previous reports" I purchased Vista and now I'm feeling like I can't trust anyone on what's said about Windows 7.

All of it feels like a hard sell.

#14 By 23275 (24.196.4.141) at 1/13/2009 11:56:05 AM
#13, Bummer... sorry you had a bad Vista experience. We see that sort of thing, regardless of OS.

If you do not like Vista, you're not going to like Windows 7 either. It is similar in many ways, and yes, it is seemingly faster, BUT I caution, Windows 7 benefits from several years of development and a driver model that is based upon Vista - so comparisons are not really fair to what Vista had to accomplish. You may like the new "Super Bar" taskbar, but then again, you may not - it has grown on me and candidly, I like it. It did take a bit to get used to, but it grew on me quickly.

If I had to bet why many power users will not like it, is that all the underlying components that are so evident in XP, are not in Vista/Windows 7 and 7 takes them deeper still. Those settings and interfaces are needed in Vista and 7, but that does not matter when it comes to user tastes.
