Microsoft originally set a deadline for the final version of IE8 for the end of 2008, but many suspected this wouldn't hold.
We noted in September that, according to the IE8 Beta 2 support page, prerelease versions of IE8 would no longer be supported come November 1, 2008, suggesting that the final version would arrive sometime in November. That month, we noticed, however, that the date had been changed to December 31, and a few days later IE8 was delayed to 2009. Microsoft again didn't give a specific date, but the company did say that it would release "one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, and then follow that up with the final release."
