A year ago BRK.B were at 4600. Now they are at 2620.

It just shows you the arbitrary nature of the stock market. You have media darlings that explode in value but other stocks like MS stagnate even though they make huge amounts of money quarter after quarter. The only way to return value to shareholders is through dividends in these cases. People are just not looking for slow growth (or weren't) if you weren't growing by huge amounts every year people didn't take notice.
Plus this guy is smoking crack anyways. in 2003 the stock split so he now has 200,000 shares. Even at 18 dollars (after the meltdown) the stock is still worth his initial investment. Add in the fact the dividends received (992,000 dollars) I think he is done okay. |

According to Yahoo's historical stock market database, Microsoft's closing price on election eve (Nov 6) 2000 was 29.07, adjusted for both splits and dividends to enable a fair comparison to today's closing price of 19.68. This represents a decline of 32.3%, nothing to inspire great confidence.
However, Oracle's similarly adjusted closing price on election eve 2000 was 27.94, closing today at a mere 16.38, a decline of 41.4%. Cisco's adjusted closing price on election eve was 55.13, and it closed today at 15.17, representing a decline of a whopping 72.5%. Maybe it's time to admit that "buy and hold" wasn't a spectacularly successful tech investing strategy for the last 8 years, and a simple fireproof mattress would have yielded far better results in many cases. That said, Microsoft seems to have been more solid than some of the other industry stalwarts. My advice is to quit yer whinin', dude! ;-) |

I know what happens when a stock splits in price. But the above says he purchased 100,000 shares in 2000. If he purchased 50,000 it should have been written like that. As it stands my initial statement is still sound. It makes no sense that a company like MS will lose value. It basically prints money every year. I don't feel all that bad for someone that had 3.6 million to invest though. This post was edited by kaikara on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 09:27. |
