We went so far as to say: "This is our spec and we're sticking to it; you can go above it, but not below it." We did that for 9x, NT, 2K, XP and or course, Vista. Me, which I liked rather a lot, was absolutely easy to make run well... provided one planned for it and built for it. As always... no surprises, just testing, planning and executing according to a reasonable design devoid of cruft.
Oh... de-crufting XP based computers post 2001 DoJ settlement, kept many employees busy for years.
