Here are my thoughts on this topic, Are web services over hyped. Yes. Because most people expect it to be the End all service. (IOW it is a visual service, But soap wsdl, uddi etc are more tools than anything else.
Will you see them on web sites and other areas yes. but I personally believe that 95% of web services will be used in B2B scenarios, an abstraction layer from one flavor of script to another.
The main question will be how long it will take for it to implement, and will all the companies still back it in a few years. there is still alot of plumbing left to do to make it work, and that may take years to work out.
Now the interesting things that I am hearing is that some developers are starting to use web services within the same framework instead of DCOM. So it may even replace interopt in a 3 teir system, further reading shows that you can eliminate the app server if you set up your system properly.
