Microsoft has admitted its biggest worry over the roll out of its flagship .Net strategy is the potential backlash from angry customers once they realise today's web services are mainly hype. And according to Charles Fitzgerald, global director of strategy for the .Net platform at Microsoft, his firm is also much more worried about IBM's Websphere than the widely perceived battle between .Net and Java. | ||

#12 - Define web services.
Personally I find them incredibly useful. I recently created a web service on my web site which allows my server at home to report the system uptime. I used to do this with a ASP page, passing parameters via a GET request, but it was not nearly as easy or as seamless. The program that reports the system uptime on the server is a Windows Service that I wrote in about an hour. That's not something I would have been able to do in the past, it would have required several days of C++ coding and debugging to get it working right. So you are right that the CLR allows for more robust and easy code development. The thing is, Web Services are part of what drives that robustness and easy code development, as I pointed out. Here are my thoughts on this topic, Are web services over hyped. Yes. Because most people expect it to be the End all service. (IOW it is a visual service, But soap wsdl, uddi etc are more tools than anything else. Will you see them on web sites and other areas yes. but I personally believe that 95% of web services will be used in B2B scenarios, an abstraction layer from one flavor of script to another. The main question will be how long it will take for it to implement, and will all the companies still back it in a few years. there is still alot of plumbing left to do to make it work, and that may take years to work out. Now the interesting things that I am hearing is that some developers are starting to use web services within the same framework instead of DCOM. So it may even replace interopt in a 3 teir system, further reading shows that you can eliminate the app server if you set up your system properly. El |

#18 - Ahh, you missed the point.
Whether or not I serve tens of thousands of users is irrelevant, the point is it's a tool/technology that made it much easier for me to solve a particular problem. That is all that Web Services are, a tool... How you use it is up to you. I used to believe the Web was overhyped. Some companies implementation of web sites were overhyped, but overall as a tool it is here to stay and has made a tremendous impact. By demanding I implement my service to serve tens of thousands of users, you are catering to the hype. |
