#3 Actually there is a clear reason... If the Prompt is generated by an OS trusted action or application that is signed, you get the MS looking one. If it is generated by who knows what you get the more dramatic box. (this however should be clearer to users if people are asking questions like this.)
#1 Yep, In fact dump all versions and replace with just two SKUs, Business and Ultimate. Both being identical but Business by default not installing games, media center, etc. Both SKUs should have user selectable features, since they can be added or removed at any time anyway.
#2 Basic is a waste, but the Aero thing really isn't the focus of the difference, as Basic does include WDDM features.
In Premium and up, turning off Aero on a computer that is capable of running it will actually 'reduce' performance. And this not only includes business type apps, but even Games running in a Window, as the Aero composer uses a shared texture write method that is as smart as the games themselves inherently drawing exclusively and with some games will even INCREASE FPS if you run in it a Window with Aero running, as strange as that might sound.
There are other reasons, like with Aero on (Glass), the composer will push some of the older GDI/GDI+ 2D drawing operations through the GPU, so it can use the GPU to decompress bitmaps to drawing fonts, to anti-aliasing lines, or even basic GDI line drawing can be significantly faster.
People that turn off Aero cause they think the Glass sucks performance are cheating themselves out of performance across the board. Also with current NVidia and ATI drivers, the Battery usage of Aero is non-existent, as it drops the GPU to 2D clocks since Aero is light enough it don't need the full speed of the GPU.
The ONLY exception to Aero slowing down a computer is with a few 945 Intel Video chipsets, since Intel uses software instead of hardware, also some early Geforce 5200 or 5600 cards with only 64mb of RAM may have trouble with the PS 2.0 transparency of the Glass. However, even in these circumstances, if you turn off Transparency, and leave Aero enabled, you will get faster performance than turning Aero all the way off and using the Basic or Classic Windows modes - since Aero is just more than the Glass it allows the full features of the new WDDM to do its thing. (Composer, GPU RAM Virtualization, GPU Pre-emptive tasking at OS level, etc.)
I personally have a bit of faith in MS on Seven, since they have some of the better UI people working and managing Windows. People that are UI experts, to the manager that is as picky about consitency as any hard core critic. Vista truly has the architecture and power for Windows 7, and adding in multi-touch and other new UI paradigms MS has been working on for years will just smooth out the mix. Espeically since Vista's graphics system now allows for things that just can't be done on XP (In fact stuff no other OS is currently capable of doing.)
It is just too bad they didn't have more time for Vista to showcase it beyond live thumbnails and flip3d, which are really simple in terms of what Vista is capable.
