Microsoft: We're serious about Internet safety and privacy | |

At RSA Conference 2008, Craig Mundie, Microsoft's Chief Research and Strategy Officer, announced his company's "End to End Trust vision," which aims to give users more control over what is trustworthy online. Microsoft published a white paper describing the initiative and the concept of a "trusted stack" where each element – including the operating system, applications, people and data – can be authenticated and is trustworthy.
The company has also created a forum for those interested in discussing security and privacy on the Internet in general. In a statement, Mundie said that the end goal of the proposal is "a more secure and trustworthy Internet, but it’s also important that we give people the tools that empower them to make good trust choices. End to End Trust will enable new opportunities for collaboration on solutions to social, political, economic and technical issues that will have a long-term impact on Internet security and privacy." | ||

| #2, I think IIS 6, SQL Server 2005, Windows Server 2003, etc., along with Vista's performance at the recent "pwn2own" contest show conclusively they're very serious about security. |

Don't tell that to Latch. He might wake up to the fact that he is still not living in 1998. I have to agree with you though. MS is making some very secure and solid products. It is strange that people don't want to recognize this. Every company has it's missteps but on the security side MS has been making a serious push to get better then they were. |

| I think MS has certainly moved into the vanguard of security. That said, Office needs a lot of work with respect to security. At this point, it may be the least secure piece of software in the MS portfolio. |

#3: Actions speak louder than words, especially for an entity like MS that says lots of things (some of them even true). The pwn2own thing meant nothing. Real baddies aren't likely to pop up at one of these and give up their goodies for a laptop. I agree that they are getting better, and IIS/SQL have proven solid, but I'll refrain from taking MS at face value every time they make another calculated proclamation.
