The people who are drafting the new user interface guidelines for Windows 7 plan to build the Ribbon, Jewel and “other new UI concepts” natively into the Windows platform.
Ultimately, they want software developers big and small to avoid the Win32 UI framework which dates back all the way to Windows 95. Instead, use this new lightweight and high performance markup-based UI framework to build “rich, graphics and animated user interfaces”. The Ribbon and Jewel (button in the top left corner) will be a part of this new framework. It sounds very much like WPF, except native.

And what if we USERS don't WANT the damned things?
I HATE the ribbon interface in Office 2007. It takes twice as long to get anything done.
Switch, click. Switch, click. Switch, click.
And yes, I know about the quick access bar at the top where you can put your own stuff. But when that thing is 4 inches wide with stuff you've added, the interface has failed horribly.

I really like the Ribbon. It takes getting used to, but, as with anything, you get better with practice.

Personally I like the Ribbon; said that I do not understand why MS does not want to release"Scout", the app to search commands in Office.
The official explanation by MS that "people would get confused" is ridiculous and offensive.

We will all be very surprised to see the user interface move much past what is currently in Vista. Creating the min-win kernal is enough of a change for MS to master. They apparently have never learned that the wish list of features is never what is released. Never has been. Never will be if MS plans to stick with the 2 to 3 year release cycle. Watch for new UIs in the successor to 7, about the same time that WinFS is figured out. Betchya 25 cents.

put me down as another "PRO RIBBON" person, i love the new task based system, not to mention the text-select mouseover with disappear as you move away from the text... that should also be native thats sexy, i'd love to use it easily in my apps... as for the ribbon, its nice but i'd think they will streamline it a bit in Windows7 to be a bit thinner maybe...
either way i like it
and as was said before, switch click, switch click seems shorter than
menu... submenu click.... menu ... submenu... click

oh ya theirs the other fact... people like my mom, and my aunt HATE the old way, they hate having to drudge through menus hell thats why they still use notepad instead of word or openoffice ... they get confused and leave
with the ribbon, they wnt to write they click write, they want to design the look they click design, and the live preview is sexy as well which really makes them happy.

Put me down for pro-ribbon and pro-sushi ;) I was never an office power user. I can see why power users would freak because they changed the interface. For new users I think the ribbon is way better than the traditional setup.

#11 I think you've got it in one. Anyone that's used the existing interface for "long enough" most likely hates the Ribbon. I'm definitely in that category and I get frustrated whenever I use Word and Excel as I'm constantly having to stop and think about which sub-ribbon they decided to stick the thing that I currently need on. It's an absolute productivity killer for anyone that's used to the existing interface.

The funny thing about a UI is that it may be worse then another technically but it is just what you are used to. People freak whenever changes like this are made. I mean look that the complaints because Add Remove Programs was changed in Vista. I know the pain. You become so used to a system that you can do it without thinking. Things change and you are back to relearning. I think with the ribbon they spent a lot of time testing with new users and they found that is was more intuitive then the old interface. It must be a difficult decision to make - create a better UI that is easier for new users and a generally a better UI but know you are going to peeve off the vast majority of power users.

They've messed up with Add/Remove too. Earlier in XPSP2, apps and updates were grouped, so even if the update only said "Update" or KB123456, you knew what to remove. Now they've separated updates and apps, so if one wants to remove an update, it can get lost in hundreds of updates simply referred to as "Update" or KB123456 in case of which you'll have to see the KB article.

You still have the option of grouping updates by the application to which they belong.
In the Installed Updates dialog, right-click the column header and click Programs. Then right-click in the whitespace of the update list and choose Group By -> Program.
