Vista SP1 available for download; Retail availability a mystery | |

This just in from the Windows Client team — the folks who’ve made clear and accurate communications on behalf of customers a priority (ahem). Even though Amazon.com posted over the weekend to its site a note stating quite clearly that Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 would be released this week, Microsoft is declining to confirm this fact. Well, actually, Microsoft might or might not be stating this is the case. It’s hard to tell from the latest convoluted company statement (provided below) exactly what is going on. | ||

| Someone posted on Ars that they received Dell Optiplexs in February that had SP1 on them. I haven't seen a unit from a manufacturer with SP1 on it myself but my guess is you will start to see them pretty soon if they are not already out there. |

The author of that story seems easy to mystify. I don't see the confustion at all.

I think MS likes to mess with Ms. Foley. "Last month, when I asked that question, the Vista team told me that PC makers would not start shipping Vista SP1 on new machines until April." Any OEM that could load Vista SP1 on new machines would do so when RTM was released. We began installing it last month on new PCs. By the way, with SP1 out my customers no longer insist that XP be pre-installed instead of Vista.

I installed it via Windows Update today. I had actually downloaded it quite a while ago... but was too scared to install it for fear I had some of that evil mystery hardware that broke SP1.
Apparently, I didn't. The install was smooth. The first big thing I noticed post-SP1 is how much faster locking/unlocking the desktop is, as well as switching users. Wow. HUGE difference (5+ seconds down to sub 1 second)... and one that will be felt every single day. |

We just got in some Dell Precision Workstations and while they had prepackaged with them Vista Business, they were not the SP1 version ( Dell images them to our specifications before they are sent to us. We are still running XP, but are near the end of testing for deployement of Vista company wide)
Meanwhile, I installed SP1 on my laptop. No issues or problems. I hadn't noticed any problems with it before, but since I bought it a couple of months ago, I haven't been traveling as often. So, I haven't had much of chance to use it. |
