They mean partially supporting Blu-ray. Wake me up if they ever support H.264, DTS, DTS HD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD....
Edit (reply to below) Yes since the article is about MS, obviously "they" refers to MS. :) And H.264 is also mandatory. DD+, DTS HD, Dolby TrueHD are optional. Who is "they"? Microsoft? Can't be talking about Blu-ray cos it already supports all the above, although all but DTS are optional. Obviously the more expensive players will support all the above, while the cheap ones will support only some. This gives manufacturers a choice (so they don't need to be forced to pay licence fees for all the codecs, so passing the costs over to the consumers), much like DVD is now.
Microsoft won't need to support the different codecs, that's down to the individual Blu-ray Disc movie players (like WinDVD and PowerDVD). More than likely, future versions of Windows will be able to read and write Blu-ray Discs from the outset. This post was edited by testman on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 08:02. |

| The more microsoft supports and includes out of the box in its base OS the more companies whine to the US Government clamming Monopoly. I highly doubt Microsoft will do anything than the absolute bare minimium to support Blu-ray. And quite frankly I don't know why they would, as part of the base operating system, support anything you listed. There are cards and software that do that just fine. |
