Surprise! IE8 beta is going to be available for download starting today at 12:00 PST. Matthew Lapsen from the IE team gave me a spur of the moment demo for you all showing us some of the core features that power users will enjoy. Keep in mind that this is a developer preview of IE8, so the way it looks may change a little.

IE8 beta 1 apparently broke one of the web sites I administer, but did not create. The site was tested with IE6, IE7, Safari, Opera, and Firefox. Check it out for funkyness if you have IE8 beta 1: http://www.sandstromproducts.com
I now believe that IE8 is likely pointing out some flaws in the code, even though the layers line up correctly in Safari, Opera, Firefox, IE6 and IE7. This post edit is to indicate that I no longer see the issue as caused by IE8 alone. Yes, its a beta. Even so, the layer misalignment can be fixed if it still exists in the RTM version. | #1 -- It's a beta 1; they've clearly stated that CSS 2.1 compliance is the goal for the "final" version, so it makes sense that there are many unimplemented features at this stage. |

iexplore processes are invading my task manager!!! This beta definitely has memory allocation issues. Heck, just having ActiveWin and an MSNBC news story open (on 2 separate tabs of course), memory usage is above 56MB -- and I just opened IE for the morning.
Removal is imminent. |

| Does anyone load a beta 1 and not expect problems? This is for developers and people running it on test boxes. Not for people to run on their primary systems. |

#5: Problems are expected; what is frustrating is that testing cannot be accomplished on semi-complex sites because the memory utilization is too high. If there's Flash and advanced CSS, then we can barely test rendering -- much less the interactivity of data (AJAX behaviors).
I had to remove it. It is only enough for simple, static pages (and personal blogs)... not for advanced functionalities unless a test machine with gigs of RAM to spare were used -- not reasonable for a test machine to be more powerful than a primary, eh! |

mooresa56: The owner of the company paid to have the site designed the way it is by a third party that used Dreamweaver with layered fonts. I argued about the jagged and blocky font links as appearing less professional than possible. The man that pays the bills gets his way. #9 It gets 17/100, IE7 gets 12/100. They're very close to the other browsers...
Safari 3.1 gets 86/100 Firefox 3 gets 67/100 Firefox 2 gets 50/100 (I get 51/100) Opera 9.5 gets 65/100 |
