Windows Live Messenger misleads users about 64-bit compatibility | |

In the small spectrum of software developers who writes compatible software with 64-bit versions of Windows, you’d expect Microsoft to be the last to drop the ball. Today, Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger team did exactly just that and dropped compatibility for 64-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. A reasonable person might be led to believe Windows Live Messenger 8.5 is somehow incompatible with those versions of Windows. Unfortunately, reason seems to be out of the equation. | ||

I have Messenger 8.5 omy desktop running Vista 64 so I am not sure if this will apply to a new build; as for XP 64 it is true that if you try to install it you get an error message but if you download it in a 32bit envronment and extract the msi file it will install on XP 64.
I am puzzled about the reason MS would lock out Vista 64 users. I could understand an attempt to block it on XP in order to push people toward Vista but does nblocking on Vista too? It does not make sense at all. |

| Running Microsoft Windows Live Messenger Beta Build 9.0.1407.1107 with Windows Vista Ulimate 64Bit. I see no issues installing and running this new build. Been running Windows Live Messenger Beta Build 9.0.1407.1107 sence 11/27/2007. |

| Well, if MS does not want to support MSN Messenger on their 64bit Os's then you could always install Pidgin (or some other compatible messenger app). |
