Today Microsoft is announcing the Windows Essential Server Solutions family of products. The family includes Windows Small Business Server 2008, formerly known as code name "Cougar" and Windows Essential Business Server 2008, formerly known as code name "Centro". Windows Small Business Server 2008 is built upon Windows Server 2008 and includes: SBS 2008 Premium also includes SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 to run on a second server. It seems MS is trying to recoup some of the money offered for Yahoo:
In SBS 2008 CAL wil not be unified as before; Premium Version users will have to buy "Premium CAL". I wonder how companies which bought SBS 2003 Premium with SA will be compensated for the absence of ISA. |

I have several customers that I was in the process of upgrading their peer to peer networks to the SBS 2003 Premium systems. I have now halted these plans as I cannot install SBS 2003 Premium and then 6 months later tell them that they are being downgraded with the new version.
It appears that after the 2003 releases of Microsoft’s server and application software, something happen internally and everything has gone downhill since; form a customer/users point of view anyway. -msm |

Btw SBS 2008 does not allow a double NIC configuration, only a single one. It seems that it is the time to buy some Cisco stocks.
Also another issue that could potentially disappoint a large number of users is the fact the back-up on tape is not supported. Personally I backup on DVDs but I personally know several people that prefer tapes. |
