Rambus gains network RDRAM support from Elpida
Time: 03:29 EST/08:29 GMT | News Source: EBN | Posted By: Guillaume Hébert

Rambus Inc. picked up some network RDRAM support Monday when Elpida Memory Inc. unveiled new 800MHz SO-RIMM modules in 64 megabyte, 128-MByte and 256-Mbyte sizes. Direct RDRAM is one of a bevy of contending memory types for the network market, including SRAM, DDR SDRAM, fast cycle RAM, and low latency SDRAM. Elpida touted its new SO-RIMM package size, similar to conventional notebook memory modules, although RDRAM hasn't shown up in the mobile PC market. The Hitachi-NEC joint DRAM venture said the SO-RIMM at 67.6mm by 31.25mm is much smaller than standard size network modules. The firm also said the SOL-RIMMs have a much smaller pin count of 160 because of the higher throughput per pin of RDRAM. The 64-MByte module is priced in sample quantities at $40, the 128-MByte at $80, and the 256-MByte at $160.
