Looks like it didn’t take long for the first external build of Windows 7 to be leaked on to the interwebs. Black fumes were reported escaping Steven Sinofsky’s office earlier this morning after news Microsoft has delivered a Milestone 1 build of the next version of Windows to OEMs spread like wildfire in a dry grassy field on a hot summer’s day. A member named “kenipnet” on Neowin.net’s forums claims to have and installed this very build on his own desktop and laptop machines, and posted this short review on Neowin. For unknown reasons, it was later deleted by the poster, but fortunately the website administrator “Neobond” has republished a cache version of the original post for all but Sinofsky to see. Of course there’s no way to prove this is true, but the facts appear consistent with ‘other reports’ of what the build contains. Take it with a grain of salt and a cup of tea, donuts sold separately. | ||

| Why would they up the version number to 6.1 for SP2 when it's still 6.0 for SP1. Has any service pack ever updated the minor revision number? |

| A number of sites have printed that MS has basically given up on Vista. They know that business is going to skip it entirely so they want to push Win7 out in 2009 instead of 2010. |

MS has in no way given up on Vista. They made it clear that long cycles between versions was not going to happen anymore and they were going to more of a 3 year evolutionary cycle. If that is the case most businesses will now be skipping releases on a regular basis. I don't get the big deal though - most large businesses have licensing schemes that allow them to run any version. MS is still going to get the money regardless of the version that they run. |

Actually, Windows 7 real name is Vista XP, which is designed to cause peoples heads to explode (especially those like Latch who love XP and think Vista sucks after years of claiming XP sucks).

| #6: An MS rep let it "slip" at a T2 last year that the name of Windows 7 was Vista R2. MS Marketing will decide what to call it at the last possible moment and in the meantiime MS will disperse teaser names to keep up the buzz. MS has ALWAYS kept us wanting the next version of Windows. |

| #7: MSFT has already publicly said from now on their client/server products would always have an R2 version, so Vista R2 would be no surprise to me if they continue this thought train. |

| AFAIK, it's going to be a significant release but not necessarily a major release. By version number it may seem so, but XP also wasn't a too minor release although it may seem that by version number (5.1)..XP brought a very large number of small fine-grained improvements over Windows 2000 which made it a pleasure to use; likewise Windows 7 will be a tweaked version of Vista that will deliver what MS actually intended to with their original "Vista" vision. |
