Shares in Swiss-based computer peripherals maker Logitech International SA gained up to 12 percent on Thursday amid speculation Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) would launch a takeover bid, traders said.
Would make a monopoly on keyboards and mice etc - but in fairness it is a good buy, Logitech have proven over the past year that both their mice and keyboards are better than what MS hardware has been putting out which is a major surprise.

It makes sense. Microsoft is making huge strides in the presense and communication area as it is already. Purchasing Logitech gives them the hardware and knowledge they need to suceed even further and compete with the likes of Cisco and their purchase of Linksys.

The story doesn't sound right to me. MS doesn't need to buy Logitech to further their business model of "providing software to run hardware".
Sure convergence requires all parties to work together but it doesn't require Microsoft to own them. That has not been Microsoft's business model over the last few years - even Gates says "we do software".
Of course, that doesn't explain the existance of the Xbox 360, Zune or their KB/Mouse division :-)
MS can't have all their eggs in one basket, so they need to dabble in hardware. Their Office and Desktop OS may be a dying breed one day if everything is mobile and in the cloud.
However, Logitech buy out sounds fishy to me as well. MS does very well in their own right with their existing keyboards and mice. They are of high quality, and sell very well.
