There are a whole bunch of new Windows XP Updates up on the Windows Update website today. The first is a new application compatibility update for April with various game and program fixes. The second is .NET Framework for Japan users. You can also download the English version from windows update, but that was released a while back. Please note that if you download the English version, there is already Service Pack 1 out for it which we posted a few weeks ago! Then there is the CD Burner fix that was posted last week, now it is on windowsupdate. Microsoft also posted the Snow White & Seven Dwarf's DVD fix. Most of these were posted as seperate downloads a while ago on the Microsoft download site, but as per usual Microsoft has finally posted them up onto Windows Update. | ||

| Not having installed .Net Framework before, the English version showed up for me for the first time yesterday; often there's a lag between when something is available for separate DL and for DL via WU. (I was also offered the Japanese version.) I assume that the version of .Net Framework offered in WU is the slipstreamed SP1 version, though I haven't confirmed that yet. |

| I've never had a problem with WindowsUpdate. And it continued to work fine today. |

| Some ad-blockers and software firewalls can undermine WU too, though most of the good ones have written in rules to work around these issues. Those having problems might want to double-check this. |

| The ones I mentioned are open. I think most any are, since they're bandied around quite a bit. It would be interesting to hear if either set makes a difference in your case, though you might have to flush your local OS DNS cache to see the difference. In 2K/XP, that's done by the "ipconfig /flushdns" command. Clearing your browser's page cache completely wouldn't hurt either. |

#37, can you clarify this point about Linksys for me? I don't have one, but I'm called upon to "support" them often enough.
Assuming you have the BEFSR41, the old firmware had two sections in the WAN IP area: "Obtain automatically" and "Specify...". Normally I like to keep routers on Automatically, since once in a while the ISP will want to push out new IP information, but with the Linksys, is it possible to simultaneously have "Automatically" selected but to have alternate DNS addresses entered as well? I realize that the "Specify..." section will be grayed out when you have "Automatically" in effect, but even though it makes absolutely no sense, I seem to recall that anything entered in those fields are in effect anyway (except perhaps for the main IP address). Can you confirm that, or do you just go straight manual all the way? As for the new firmware, it's redesigned, and beyond knowing that the choice for WAN type is now a little menu and not a radio button choice, I don't know if the behavior of it has changed. With my Dlink router, it's definitely one or the other, so I just override DNS in XP (which allows you to have the PC set on Automatic but still override DNS). |

| OK good, that's a nice idea to have DNS broken out like that now. If the behavior of the old firmware was as I suspected above, this is effectively the same thing, except it's plainer and intended behavior now. Thanks. |

| #44 - for those who have been with us for the whole hog of 4 years they would know we used to use Apache, our downtime then was far greater than what we have had on our new server...and the downtime on this server has only been due to our own reboots. |
