Windows Home Server Update on the way... | |

Windows Home Server Team: Hi all. Next week on Tuesday, Nov 27 we will release a new update for Windows Home Server software. This is a scheduled update - part of the ongoing process of continually enhancing the customer experience with Windows Home Server. The new functionality will be downloaded via Windows Update and made available to existing Windows Home Server customers. Details are available here, but the main benefit of the update is that it will improve the remote access experience for Windows Home Server users by providing them with a “trusted SSL certificate” for their home servers. That means customers will be able to access their home server from outside the home more seamlessly, without any security warnings. The Windows Home Server team worked closely with Windows Live Domains and GoDaddy, a leading provider of Web domain addresses, to provide the certificate for the homeserver.com web pages customers use for remote access. In addition, this month’s update provides a new “Delete All” button to let users delete all home computer backups that are stored on the home server, as well as a few improvements to the Shared Folders and Server Storage components of Windows Home Server. | ||

It isn't on Technet Either. I had to buy it from NewEgg for $169.
I installed it last nigh. No issues at all. My 3Ware 9500S-8 Raid controller was yellow in the device manager. I told it to update the driver, pointed it to Windows update, and bam! It downloaded and installed the driver. That's actually the first time that's ever worked for me :) All six 300GB drives came online instantly and were added to the drive pool in minutes. six 300GB drives and a 120gb drive came out to be a 1.75TB pool. The backup system is the best ever invented, period. Some will complain about the lack of customizability, but when you reallly dig in to it, you discover you don't NEED it to be customizable! This is a solid product. I don't get to say it often, so here goes... Good job MS ! About that price though... :) TL |

BTW... the odds are you will never see it on MSDN, Technet or anywhere else.
This is a HOME USER product, and home user products typically don't hit those services, which are intended for business purposes. I'll tell you what though, the $249 I paid for TechNet plus last week is an absolute bargain. Jeezus, it's software heaven :) This is exactly the program tech's like me (us) have needed for years (since they killed off the old AdvanceAccess program). It's about time they started supporting those of us that support them. TL |

Oh, one word of warning here guys...
Make SURE your boot drive is connected so it is the lowest logically connected drive on the lowest numberd controller. There are NO install options! WHS installs itself on the lowest enumerated drive on the lowest enumerated contoller, period. In simpler terms, whatever the BIOS decides is drive C, that's where WHS installs itself. And this is indeed based on Server 2003 Small Business. | TL: Any idea on what anti virus program you intend to use? Avast's WHS beta seems to be the only player at this time. Maybe the anti virus firms are trying to determine how much to soak home server uses for. After all, no one will pay $700+ for server anti virus for a home machine (would they?). |

Funny you should ask that. I just posted that very question on HardOCP a few hours ago :)
You just helped me more than I can help you LOL I have found a security problem with WHS... For an account to be able to log in remotely and access their share folder, you have to enable Remote Access for that user account. Ok, no problem. BUT! When you enable Remote Access for any account, it also enables Remote Computer Access to any enabled computer on your network! You can't just give share folder access by remote access! That's a serious oversight IMHO. Hopefully they will address this... TL |
