Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer | |

Microsoft has created a new tool, the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), to analyze Windows systems for common security misconfigurations. Version 1.0 of MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems. MBSA runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems and will scan for missing hotfixes and vulnerabilities in the following products: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and 5.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000 and XP. MBSA uses a version of HFNetChk to scan for missing hotfixes and service packs for Windows, IIS, and SQL. MBSA will create and store individual XML security reports for each computer scanned and will display the reports in the graphical user interface in HTML. | ||

Put it in the format domain\computer or workgroup\computer.
For example if your computer is called HomePC in the workgroup WORKGROUP put in: WORKGROUP\HomePC. |

Well, #8, just the fact that you encrypted your entire Program Files directory tells me you don't understand EFS.
EFS is for sensitive information that you would not want someone to get their hands on, if say, the stole the info off your harddrive. It does not prevent hackers from breaking into your computer or anything like that. |

Very, VERY nice effort, but too many errors at this time.
I got 5 "Unhandled Exception" errors. Also, it is calling out "Missing" HotFixes that are definetely installed as part of the Security Roll-up 1 package I already installed. Needs work, but I look forward to the day they have it right. TL |

Awesome tool. Definitely worth the effort and this is far the superior of hfnetchk and mpsa. Now if I could only push patches to computers remotely I would be set.

| I tried running this as a Domain Admin and as my own account with Admin Privs, on all my servers. Yet under both it seems to think I am not the admin on all my servers. So it will not check IIS or the NT 4.0 server security updates. Kinda funny but it only ran right on my XP rig, and did not properly check my NT 4.0 servers. I like it, but it is useless if it thinks the Domain Admin account does not have security privs on all the servers in the Domain. And yes the Domain Admin group is listed in the Administrators Local group on every server. |

| #19, I do have local Admin rights. I am a member of all my servers local administrators group. The Domain Admins group is also a member of the Local Admins group. The hfnetchk does scan those machines fine, it is just this GUI based one that does not. |

| Now all they have to do it is replace Windows Update with this, and allow it to remotely install patches. Then it would be ideal. |

Ceazar, you can still use hfnetchk.
At the time you bought NT4, did you buy it based upon a promise from Microsoft to provide a bunch of FREE tools like this? If not, then you're complaining about something that Microsoft never had any obligation to give you for FREE. You bought NT4, you got NT4. Everything else is a gift. |
