Are there any real reasons — other than psychological ones — to wait for a first service pack (SP) of Windows Vista before deploying?
Microsoft’s position, since the company released Vista to manufacturing last year, has been that users didn’t need delay their deployments until the delivery of SP1 because the team would push out new updates and fixes continually via Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and other patching mechanisms. Just this week, in fact, Microsoft delivered via Windows Update two mega hotfix packs (performance and compatibility) for Windows Vista that include many of the fixes that will be part of Vista Service Pack (SP) 1, which now is due in Q1 2008.

For me a service pack, especially on a disk, makes it easier to update, rather than continuous downloading.
Especially with Vista, which seems to crash so often.

I think from the standpoint of testing--particularly of functionality changes--there is a definite need for service packs. There are some things that can be done in a service pack that shouldn't be done in a garden-variety patch.

They can't be passe...
How else to have a firm base from which to build new systems? Sure, a disk image is great, but what about when you get new hardware or want to change some key items in the base image? A SP provides a very nice starting point. There's still a heck of a lot of updates to deal with, even starting from this base, but it beats starting with the initial OS release.

#3--when it comes to imaging, though, Vista is much improved over XP--you can add/apply the updates as they come out right to the offline image.

Also, it is easier to say "... requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2" than to list all the patches :-)

#4, Yup - drag and drop them to the "Updates" folder and you're done.

Not Service Pack per say but how infrequent these Service Packs get released. Microsoft should offer more frequent major patch releases, similar to Mac OS X and RHEL (and similar Linux distros). And for the sake of installation, make it easier to slipstream major patch installation DVDs.

#4,
I'd LOVE some tips on how to do that. I know how to do it with XP, but vista is a whole new ballgame.

Here's where Microsoft blew it. They had a great idea, and cancelled it after ONE CD was issued...
I forget the date, but there was, for the lack of a better name, "Windows Update on CD" that MS issued for XP a few years ago.
The plan was to issue this disc quarterly, I believe. Each disk would have all prior updates, as well as new one's including service packs.
The thing was AWESOME!
You install XP, then installed this CD and ran it. It ran like Windows Update offline and was many, many times faster.
Then you visited WU only to get the few that weren't on the disk.
It shipped once, and was never heard from again.
It's a shame when Microsoft has brilliance, someone flushes it down the toilet.

BTW... the monthly 'patch' cd's are a waste of my time since they only have the current months patchts. May as well just go to windows update.
