Hailstorm is the code name. Announced in January to a ho-hum response from a technology community more concerned about stock prices than some Microsoft scheme, Hailstorm was re-announced last week to the same audience. The result was the same eye-roll and yawn. It's possible that Microsoft can no longer generate buzz around anything it does. It would certainly help if the company was more precise in explaining what it's doing. From what I can tell, Hailstorm is an upgrade to Microsoft Passport, a system that monitors users to help personalize Web sites and track usage. It's all part of the vague .Net (dot-net) initiative.
