War on terror overblown Microsoft | |

The endless security measures imposed on society as a result of the "war on terror" have become overblown and intrusive, according to Microsoft Redmond senior security analyst Steve Riley. (The same can be said for some security measures *cough*Vista UAC*cough*). He made the comments in a talk at day one of Tech.Ed Australia about software security. | ||

#3, it is a relevant and effective example that many people have personally experienced - and in my opinion, entirely valid.
It is about balance - finding it and maintaining it. Also, we ought not be so dang timid about talking candidly about such matters - they are all around us and pretending there are not extremists of all sorts willing to use violence as a means to some end - however insane that end might be. So when, as lightly as a guy touches on an example like this, we should accept it in the context it is intended and not freak out over it. I think the guy only sought to find an example that people would recognize. |

| Steve's always been outspoken and forthright with his views. Unfortunately due to current projects I cannot be up north at the Aussie TechEd but Steve's sessions are always the best to attend - he always has the best content. |

| I wonder if the US government tried to pressure MS into putting backdoors into its OS using unrealistic terrorism risks. And MS did its own research and came to a different conclusion on the risks. |

I didn't have any problems with what he said. We are a society of extremes. Unfortunately, all we end up with are more laws, restrictions, and fears of doing the right thing. Being politically correct, zero tolerance at schools, obvious safety labels on products, security cameras everywhere, required helmets for kids riding bikes, and no nail clippers on airplanes are all examples of just how ridiculous we have become as a society.
How the hell did I make it this far in life without being harassed to the point of being incapable of performing my job, pouring hot coffee on my crouch, having someone kill me, or busting my head open while riding a bike, I will never know. Lucky, I guess... |
