CompTIA: IE voted 'most influential' tech product | |

The most influential technology product of the past 25 years is Microsoft's oft-derided Web browser, Internet Explorer, according to a survey of IT professionals. The survey was carried out by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), a 25-year-old trade body that certifies IT professionals and that is funded by major vendors, including Microsoft. Out of the top five products in the poll, only one--the iPod--is not a Microsoft product. | ||

lol... Microsoft takes 4 out of the top 5!?! How could any normal person in this industry come up with rankings like that? Good grief! Zealotry anyone?

#1: I would argue that neither IE nor Firefox deserve to be on the list. Leave it at Mosaic for web browser. Everything else is Mosaic+. On the other hand, given MS' monopoly, everything they make & do could be argued to be 'most influential' since we all do what MS tells us to do.

Which was also based on Mosaic. "The Grandpa of Internet Explorer was a web browser called Mosaic, which first began development at the National Center for Super Computing Applications (NCSA) back in 1987. It was the first browser to use a GUI (graphical user interface) and was ground breaking stuff. The technology and trademarks behind Mosaic were eventually licensed to a company called Spyglass, Inc. Spyglass, Inc was an Internet software company associated with the University of Illinois that was founded in 1990 especially to commercialize various technologies during the early days of the World Wide Web. In 1995, Spyglass licensed the source code for Mosaic to Microsoft and Internet Explorer was born. Interestingly, Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer have a common heritage. Many of those behind the original Netscape Navigator were also on the team that created Mosaic — in fact, back in 1994 Netscape Navigator was called "Mosaic Netscape" before a lawsuit forced a change of name." http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/historyofie.mspx |

| #3: You forgot the critical nugget, the part that happened at the end. Spyglass worked a deal with MS that would pay Spyglass for every copy of IE sold by MS. As soon as the ink was dry, MS went and gave IE away for free and screwed Spyglass out of any revenue. |
