Intel announces Core 2 Extreme mobile, five new desktop processors | |

Today Intel officially announced its first Core 2 Extreme mobile dual-core processor, the X7800. Also announced were five new desktop processors, with front side bus speeds of up to 1333MHz. While the performance boost that the CPUs get from the faster FSB isn't incredible, the platform as a whole does offer a taste of what's to come in Intel's 45nm Penryn CPUs. Upgraders can purchase a new P35-based board without having to wait longer for the Penryn, which could be released as early as September to compete with AMD's Barcelona CPU due in August. | ||

| Right now it appears that Intel will retain the performance crown, at least into next year, that it took them years to win back from AMD. AMD has done a nice job of staying price competitive, but at the cost of profits. AMD has some 'splaining to do if they can't get IBM's new chip technologies incorprorated into their processors pronto as future profits will go poof. With the greatly increased chip yields on 45 nm Intel not only wins on performance but will win the price war also. |
