"California State Attorney General Bill Lockyer, a 60-year-old veteran of 30 years in Democratic politics, was in Washington two weeks ago for the national conference of state attorneys general and dropped by a federal district courtroom for an hour or so. In progress was the latest stage of antitrust proceedings against Microsoft. His interest may have been stimulated by the more than $75,000 in campaign contributions from corporate rivals of the embattled technology giant." | ||

This is interesting, and not surprising. Some have speculated that Microsoft basically rode out the original case and played their part such that their enemies would screw it up badly. It worked in part already, as Jackson's orders were overturned and his competency put under question.
Now in this followup, they're pulling out the big guns... proof that Microsoft's competitors bribed the government in order to make this case happen. |

Bob Novak isn't the most reputable "independent, un-biased" reporter; the fact that he doesn't include one dollar figure for any of MS's 6 million in contributions last year alone is a bit conspicuous, never mind the presence of one of the largest lobbying contigents in Washington. Nor does he know dick about technology--he's just trying to make a tech issue political.

sodajerk - No conspiracy theory at all. All of the lobbying from the anti-MS contingent is right out there in public. Mr. Novak just finally decided it wasn't cool to bash Microsoft and started reporting the other side of the story.

| But soda, you said now they are oulling out the big guns. Who are they? Palm, AOL, Sun were always involved. So the big guns, the new ones, are Gateway, Intel, Sony, right? And you say that this is proof that the competitors bribed the DOJ, which I don't see where your pulling that connection from. So where's this conspiracy? As you said, the real opposition has always been right out front; what has been kept secret is exactly what went down with MS and Bush's DOJ, how much MS lobbies Congress and the WH, and how much cash they have spent towards poliical campaigns. Some of this is out there, but the vast public really has no clue. |
