Intel buys into VMWare | |

Intel and VMware announced today that Intel Capital is taking a $218.5 million stake in virtualization company VMWare. Intel will purchase 9.5 million Class A shares at $23 per share, which, at the completion of VMware's forthcoming IPO, will give Intel about a 2.5 percent stake in the company. Because VMware's stock is split between Class A shares, which have less voting power, and Class B shares, Intel won't control that many votes in the company, but they will get a board seat. | ||

| Savvy move on Intel's part. This further inhibits Microsoft from buying the company given that their present and proposed virtualization products are way behind EMC's VMware. If Microsoft does bite, Intel makes a hefty profit. Meanwhile, Intel keeps a seat at the two market leaders in virtualization. Win/Win. |

| i'm trying to figure out how intel gains from this. I highly doubt its a financially-oriented investment... rather its a strategy. Look at intel's thousands (literally) of investments, and that is the rule. |

#2 Some people think x86 server growth will slow considerably as virtualization rolls out. In our case that will be true. We plan to replace 10-12 off warranty servers with 2 virtual boxes running dual quad core CPU's - 2 is for failover. We only really need 1.
I think Intel is just hedging bets. If a lot of virtualization is on ESX, then they make some money off the investement. Dell is supposedly going to embed ESX Lite in some servers in the next couple of months. |
