Nearly one in every three Xbox 360 consoles fail, according to retailer reports
By several metrics, the Xbox 360 is the most successful console so far of this generation. Despite the startling pace of the Wii, the Xbox 360 still has the most consoles sold worldwide and the longest list of games and exclusives. For a gamer looking for online-enabled high-definition gaming today, the Xbox 360 appears to satisfy those needs. One often overlooked factor when considering a console purchase is reliability, an area that is apparently where the Xbox 360 falls short. Anecdotal evidence is heavily pointing to Microsoft’s latest console as being significantly more prone to failure than what consumers are accustomed to.

We just sent my brother-in-law's back for the 3rd time. After 2 times with the 3 flashing red lights, they sent a different console, and the DVD Drive died on this one.
I had to talk to a repair tech who told me that it could be due to plugging the XBOX into a power strip instead of directly into the wall. I fnd that hard to believe. Either way, we'll see how this repair works. He bought this two Christmases ago when they were first released. His warranty has been extended until NEXT June. I'm pretty sure they know there are issues, but they just don't want to admit it yet.

#3 - it isn't just overheating problems though - there are lots of DVD drive failures and AV unit failures as well.

I wonder under what circumstances they're typically dying--is it after a long period of constant use (i.e., overheating)? Are they stuck in enclosed spaces with little ventilation (like many, if not most entertainment centers)? I read that some of the repaired units in Europe are being sent back with an improved heatsink. I'm lucky that nothing has happened to mine (yet... gulp), but I very rarely play games on it.

#5 hard to say really - but I do feel its not really user fault. As I've said before my family have had I think 7 die in total, 4 red lights, DVD drive breaking on first turn on, AV breaking, I can't say any overheated due to the positioning or anything like that - because not only is everywhere they are well ventilated - but also why hasn't any other AV stuff like Wii, PS2, PS3 etc died.
The improved heatsink in new units as well as the Elite indicates they had a problem with overheating clearly.
As I said, a lot are not overheating issues, there are audio faults, AV faults and lots of DVD drive faults, then we have the scratching problem too which lots of people return their machines for which despite what Microsoft said by blaming the users - it was proven in Germany to be a fault with the DVD drive.
Again while I love the 360, it is very unreliable for a lot of people.

its a hit or miss thing i have one, i have a dozen friends that have them and none of them have ever had an issue
ya i had a RROD but thats cause the cat pulled the AV cable out ... i fixed it and it was back working ... tada
30% is rediculous, i sincerly doubt it considering my console is from the original december launch batch.

the power strip thing is true i've had a few people say that plugging it in direct fixed their issue before dont know why tho
Also i hate to tell people but most of that 30% is probably counting the refurbished units that broke... i think thats the main issue, is refurbished units that get sent to people re-breaking

every time this comes up there's always one guy who says, "well I know 800 people with Xbox 360 and less than 0 have broken".
when my video died the 360 was sitting on a shelf under a desk that doesn't have walls. very well ventilated. I've only exchanged it once, but really haven't been playing much since I got the replacement. it's more decorative at this point.

#9, They need to investigate this and issue vouchers for immediate at retail replacements for new units. If this 30+% is in any way close to the actual rate of failure, it is way too high.
We've all been bitten [manufacturers] at least once - by faulty/defective sub-assembly suppliers. There is only one thing to do - step up, and protect the customer and your name.
I've been through it with a bad run of fans and before that, drives and I know that customers are mighty happy when then know you will always do the right thing. You do that and you'll have earned their business and respect.
We step up no matter what, or what it is - and even when we didn't have a thing to do with the build. You step up and own it and fix it. That is what customers deserve.

Ya know, my kids have had a 360 since Feb 2006 and have had no issues until, I kid you not, yesterday when the unit started flashing red lights.
That's 1 year and 5 months later. We'll see how good MS is about fixing it but I gotta tell ya the failure rate may approach 50% at 2 years.
YIKES!

Just because a DVD drive failed does not mean it's not heat. Overheating causes many many problems, and could very will cause a DVD player some problems.

#9 - I agree completly - there are some people (certainly in the UK) who are being charged £80 to get their units repaired, thats nearly 1/3 of the cost of a new unit - clearly there are problems with the 360's - I'd go so far as to say units made before the new heatsink was added not just launch units are the problem. Admit there was a problem, make sure you have found out why it has happened and fix it - then make sure your customers get working units instead of 3/4 broken repaired units again and again..
#11 - if that was the case I would have posted the 100 other odd articles about it over the past months...difference this time is that the site is reliable. How about discussing the article instead of making digs.
#13 - my brothers DVD failure on the 360 happened as he turned on the console for the first time, not saying that isn't overheating too straight away - but I'd just guess at the drive being dead from the get go.

For anyone in the UK who are interested - repair times are now 25 days or more.

But that wouldn't have left room for all the iPhone coverage on ActivePhone.

It's not the 1st time we hear such news, problems related to the X360. I never bought one because I just don't want to have to mess with returning a unit ever. PC is ok for now.
Let's see about the Elite in a few weeks/months. Hear they improved heatsink and probably better solder. But seems DVD model/brand is the same.

#5, My B-I-L's 360 sits in a wide open section of a TV Stand with plenty of space around it, and his old XBOX sits on the VCR shelf with much less space so much lesss ventilation. 360 has problems. Original XBOX is still the original, no problems. I'm sure in his case it's not overheating.
When he gets his back, we'll try plugging it directly into a wall outlet and see if that helps, although we really won't know if that's what fixes it.
Either way, his warranty was extended to almost 2.5 years, so we're covered until next June.
I'm waiting for the article that quotes a former call center employee to give us the real scoop.
