SuperSite for Windows |
Posted By: Michael Dragone |
Almost six years ago, I wrote a multi-article series called the Windows XP Installation Super Guide aimed at helping Windows users install, upgrade, and migrate to Windows XP, Microsoft's then-new operating system. That now-out-of-date series was well received, so I thought I would provide a similar set of articles for Windows Vista, complete with step-by-step guides, troubleshooting advice and, hopefully, answers to all of your questions about moving to Windows Vista. It's been a long six years, so let's see what's changed.

Paul did a great job on this one - he always gets these types of articles right.

I'd prefer to read a Windows Vista Uninstallation Super Guide...

LOL. I could have used it last night :)
Actually, I used Ultimates image backup to snapshot the system, then broke out the XP CD.
Backing down to XP took me 6 hours. That's the time to re-format, install xp, apply updates, install apps, restore data, and two levels of images done with Acronis.
I got done at 2am. ZZZZZzzzzzzz.......

Anyone aware of a GOOD utility that can track down a process or app using up too many cpu cycles?
Task Manager is useless for in-depth. It jumps around too much.
I need something in-depth that does graphs over time, etc...
Kinda like Vista did LOL
I think it might be Spyware Doctor 5.0. I'm not sure I'm liking this new version.

#4, TL, go here and DL Process Manager, http://ef-process-manager.efsoftware.qarchive.org/
It will help you trace and solve CPU/Process related issues - let me know if you want to learn how to control any process and how to set up sepcific environment variables - <irony> which Vista does much better by default :)
Also, if you want to trace how you machine performs in the context of web apps, go here,
http://www.tracet.net/loadtraceroverview.htm to see how to measure and trace loads between your client and a remote server.

lketchum (or anyone else)--have you seen issues with DEP causing Adobe Reader 8.1 to crash? I keep getting these errors with Adobe Reader crashing on close, and the error message says that it's due to DEP. When I try to put Adobe Reader on the exclude list for DEP, it says that "The program must run with DEP enabled. DEP cannot be disabled for this program." I hesitate to turn off DEP completely....

#6, Real quick [we're all doing a happy dance over some dev in the new site], yes, we have studied this a great deal - one example, here - http://blog.libertech.net/blogs/lketchum/archive/2007/05/27/windows-vista-performance-and-reliability-monitor-silencing-detractors.aspx where many apps run head long into what are actually DEP related issues that hammer both iexplorer.exe and then [when one closes a stalled not responding event] a much worse explorer.exe crash. [Some FLASH web parts, Adobe, and many IMon related Anti-virus monitors].
If you dig into the data, you'll see that a child process terminated abnormally - in Adobe, this will be due to its auto-updater and its pre-loader. Remove these components from within options in Adobe and also from the startup group. Next uninstall Adobe Flash and reinstall it - after you have modified Adobe.
If this does not work, go here, http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2007/01/23/security-features-vs-convenience.aspx scroll down to see how to adjust DEP in IE [to from IE 7, BTW].
If it persists after that, be sure to tell MS here, http://support.microsoft.com/contactussupport/?ws=support - they do listen and they are working with Adobe on both this and FLASH related DEP centric events that casue IE and on occasion, explorer.ese itself, to crash. Good luck! L

lketchum: thanks so much! I will have to take a look at this over the weekend. I posted something on the Adobe forums, but I got crickets in response. I'm glad (sort of) that I wasn't the only one seeing this....

bluvg,
not an expert like the ketchum but if you only need a pdf reader in vista install foxit.
it runs faster than a v8 leaf blower but doesn't blow like adobe.

#10 - If Microsoft put a PDF reader into the OS, they would be sued in federal court.
#2 - Gotta agree, Vista flaked out on me again last night. I could open up the "start" menu, but if I tried to run an app it would not come up. Couldn't even get task-manager to come up. Was able to do ctrl-alt-del and reboot, fortunately.
As soon as I have a free weekend, XP is going back on my laptop.

Already got that one this weekend. I do think it's Spyware Doctor, but not quite sure yet.
