Microsoft Sets July 1 as Office 2003 Cutoff
Time: 00:21 EST/05:21 GMT | News Source: PC World | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Microsoft Corp. announced Monday that it will pull the plug on Office 2003 the last day of June, after which it won't ship the suite to OEMs and system builders.

In a blogged announcement, Eric Ligman, Microsoft's senior manager for small business community engagement, set the cut-off. "After June 30, 2007, OEM Microsoft Office 2003 will no longer be available," said Ligman. "Some authorized OEM Microsoft distributors may have some remaining inventory left for a short time after June 30th; however, Microsoft will no longer be shipping [it] to them."

Microsoft FORCING people to upgrade. This is one reason open-source is getting more and more viable for me.

I've already run into Office 2003 documents which when opened in Office 2007, looked garbled and not pretty. A LOT OF WORK to setup the document to look as it should.

How are they forcing you to upgrade? Is Bill going to come knocking on your door if you have 2003 and make you buy and install 2007. You can't expect a software company to continue to sell an older version on their software when a newer one exists. Does Honda still sell a 2003 Civic? There is plenty to bitach at MS about do you really have to pick something as inane as this.

I have converted every document I have for my business and personal use to 2007 and not one had any problems. My guess is you will have way more problems importing into open office than you will going from 2003 to 2007.

Winux, I call a complete lie on that one. I have extensively used Office 2007 with 2003 generated docs, and even save all my docs in 2003 and have NEVER had a problem.
Office 2007 has full support for Office 2003 formats, it wouldn't even be in their interest to make it incompatible.

Second, no longer selling copies of 2003 is not forcing you to upgrade.

#3: A better question would be, "How do Office 2007 documents look in Office 2003?" That is how they force you to upgrade -- peer pressure. After all, why does everyone have Word? Easy: Because everyone else has Word. Office 97 was (and still is) good enough for most people, the vast majority of whom only use 5-10% of what Office can do. So how come we all aren't still using Office 97? You can try to live in Office 2003 world all you want, but pretty soon you'll start getting Word 2007 documents. Can't read or edit them? No problem, there is an easy solution...

#4 "Can't read or edit them? No problem, there is an easy solution... "

Yeah. The Office Compatibility Pack you moron.

"By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats."

Wow. Free viewers too.

#5, I'm sure every Office user knows about this compatibility pack and has already installed it.

#4, As I've said as well, Office 97 will accomplish nearly any task needed out of an office productivity suite.

Anyone who believes that Office is upgraded every year or two due to usability improvements and "must-have" or requested features fails at Software Business 101. These regular and perpetual upgrades also have a nice bottom line impact for the Microsoft solution providers, integrators and consultants. I'm not knocking Microsoft for making money--it is their purpose--just the zealots here that try to justify how important and necessary the latest version of Office is.

#7 By 32132 (142.32.208.232) at 6/19/2007 5:02:23 PM
#6 zealots like you and Latch who think people are stupid and get stampeded into buying a new version of Office are very tiresome.

Office 2000 was pointless.

OfficeXP added smart tags which I simply can't live without today. That was a HUGE usability improvement.

Office 2003, in my opinion performs better than XP, and is much less of a PITA, especially with wanting to install a feature (even if you've already installed it) everytime you do something.
Wasn't really a must-have upgrade over XP, but a good improvement.

Office2007 is, well, Office 2007. More efficient UI to handle all of Office's features, brings features that you might not otherwise have used to the foreground, etc... While yes, there are still some quirky things about it, it is a huge upgrade.

I say again, you can create perfectly compatabile Office 2003 docs in Office 2007, they look exactly the same in both.
And discontinuing sales on an old product is not forcing anyone to upgrade.

#9 By 3653 (68.52.143.149) at 6/19/2007 6:06:06 PM
forced? forced to BUY something? wow. that is an amazing way to describe it winux.

Thats like saying sony is forcing you to upgrade your tv set, because they started offering a newer model, and stopped selling the old one.

Sorry to be so short, but I'm on my way to the grocery. God &^% Publix is forcing me to buy milk again.

Part of the discussion around this issue touches <again> on the "good enough is good enough" mantra that is so popular these days.

When that happens, people close themselves off - most especially tiny companies, that really can benefit most form it, from what Office is all about and how it can be leveraged. Here's what I mean...

<Again, based only upon that which I see among the businesses we support> Office is rarely treated as an island and its feature set is best and easily leveraged when Office is used in support of distributed work and collaboration. Office use among our clients fuly leverages shared workspaces inside SharePoint Services and Portal Server. These are customized and used to house all forms of web parts that are very easy to build as well as SSRS, or SQL Server Reporting Services. Users self-provision sites and workspaces that face internal teams and external customers - hundreds and thousands of sites are created and Office's tools work with these spaces and Exchange veyr well. Pricipals and most others have their own sites and personal dashes that are populated with real-time views of "Information as Products" which allow them to make better decisions.

I do not assess that MS Office can be viewed in any other way - other than as part of a system of systems. It is just too easy for even lay admins and end users to turn up server based services that work so well with it. Yes, it is the center of personal productivity, but Offce 2007 offers so much in the way of extensibility that I assess people and companies would be foolish to ignore those capabilities. When companies make use of these tools they get a lot more done, look far more professional and they have better internal communications. I have watched small company after small companygrow like mad and in no small part, based upon what they can do and how quickly they can do it - as enabled by technology. Fully enabling all that Office can do - alongside its servers, is just too easy. I assess it is a big mistake to evaluate Office in the limited context of what the suite alone can do. In the larger context, Office 2007 is definatley the best product that can be used and it is well worth the upgrade. Look at it with Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 on Server 2003 SP2 and Exchange - you'll see what I mean.

So I am guessing Office 2003 SP3 will not appear?

We upgraded to Office 2007 and overall I am satisfied with it.
Said that, in order to be completely honest, I have to admit that Office 2007 was rushed to the market in order to comply with dead-lines.
Besides the lack of the "ribbon" in Outlook, which is the app that most distinguish Office from all other competitors, there are several bugs and glitches that, hopefully, MS will address sooner than later; for me the slowliness of the entire suite is what should get the highest priority.
yes I installed the recent patch and responsiveness has increased a little bit but not enough.
Btw does anybody knows how "Office Ultimate" SKU is selling? I wonder if the fiasco with "Vista Ultimate" is affecting the Office 2007 version using the same word.

#11, what makes you think that? The article is referring to not letting OEMs ship Office 2003 bundled with new computers. It is not referring to dropping support for existing customers.
