In October 2003, I blogged about how much Windows Vista—then codename "Longhorn"—lookd like Mac OS X Panther. Apple CEO Steve Jobs' Leopard demo was a déjà vu experience, where the new Mac OS looks lots like Windows Vista. Microsoft gave the first real, public look at Windows XP's successor during the company's 2003 developer conference. All too familiar from Mac OS X: Translucent windows; resizing Windows (that maintained integrity and quality of playing or streaming video); live search lists; common address book; and many more features. Four years later, it's Mac OS X that would appear to be the copier.

I've never cared about people freaking over who copied whom. It's a natural evolution of the core feature set of the OS. As in martial arts, you absorb everything you see, take what works for you and discard the rest. Same principles in OS design and UI design. Just as long as silly patents don't get in the way.

#1, Good and relevant point. Apple should be above this kind of behavior - but the point is, it isn't and it's very unfortunate for all of us. We've all been drawn into it in some way - each adding what might not help [myself most especially included].

The irony of this article and its title is that Microsoft and Gates, particularly, would never jab back like this. They're professionals who are above this kind of behavior. If I were an Apple/Mac fan, I'd be embarrassed that Jobs acts like such a whiny kid more often than not, and can now be considered a hyprocrite, as well. Apple could be a respectable company if it weren't for the men in charge.

Hard to blame stevej completely. He sees the amount of slave labor donated to open-source efforts, primarily due to the overwhelming ABM mantra. And he'll gladly use the same strategy (ABM) to increase the hordes of paying appletards (cult of mac).

Has anyone noticed a reduction in the I'm a MAC, I'm a PC ads? Maybe they are reworking the message to be "Hi, I'm a PC and I'm a PC wanna be".

More like they shot their summer ad budget on iPhone commercials...
iPhone: "Hi I'm an iPhone"
Razor: "and I'm a Razor"
iPhone: "What are you doing Razor?"
Razor: "I'm counting all the 500 smackers I saved my owner when he bought me instead of you! What are you doing iPhone?"
iPhone: " I'm cleaning the slime off of my touch screen."

#2: As Shakespeare said, "There is nothing new under the Sun." It's all been done before. Apple, MS and the Linux companies are all copying each other as they all evolve. No one is above the rest. I'm not quite sure how it's bad for "us" if Apple copies some elements of Vista, which copied elements of OS X, which copied elements of... etc etc etc. Slamming Apple for something everyone, in every industry, does is silly. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but it's true that you get validation from having others copy your work. The entire fashion industry is based on this concept, where designs are copied by other designers, which validate the initial designer.

#9, What I meant in the context of Apple is how they have spoken to and accused others of copying them - that is what they are rightfully above - they have no need to prove anything.
I like the analogy, though - it's a good one. As I recall, and no I was not actually there [missed it by only a year or so], Plato said something along the lines of, "the only thought of any value is that which is original - original thought"
So far in life, I have had only one original thought.

#10: I would disagree with Plato, depending on his context. Of value to whom? I would propose that thought does not have to be original to be of value -- even great value. And what context of 'value'? I assume that Plato was speaking idealistically of the pinnacle of philosophical discovery. However, this is turning into a Latch Tangent, so I will sign off before we're hip-deep in Socrates and Aristotle.

#8, Very Funny - thanks for the laugh! :)
#11, I think he really did mean that which was truly new - as in previously undiscovered in any way. BTW, having been stuck [literally] broke and with no cash - where once I had to pick olives for living money - (Speaking of course of, the olive grove of Academus - if as many interpret it, it meant the college of learning, I can say for a fact that I learned a few things doing that... like don't lose your pack, wallet, and ID, for starters... and then how generous and open people can be if one is will to simply start working <hard>).

I've found there's a disproportunate number of coffee brewers, who were also philosophy majors.
