Microsoft is building some massive facilities in various places around the world. It houses everything from Live to Hotmail. Can you imagine a building 1.3 miles big? And its full of thousands and thousands of servers. Michael Manos the senior director of Data Center Services talks about effeciency for environmental reasons and how Microsoft is going green. | ||

470,000 square feet is insane.
The biggest data center I ever had the pleasure of hosting within, was 300,000 square feet. It was owned by Exodus (anyone else remember them?) and LITERALLY 60% of the square footage was empty. My mind is finding it hard to wrap around the idea of 470k square feet of actual USED space... let alone the fact that there will be many of these data centers. Its a whole new world friends. ps... I heard google bought up that 300k data center. GULP. |

One word.. Blade servers..
Best thing ever created, I think.. If you fill up 470K feet of space with Blades, then there's something really happening in there.. |

Neither google installation i saw used blades, although they had approximated those same advantages. They stripped off all housing, and it was about 2U tall, rackmounted systems.
