When Dell put up its IdeaStorm community-feedback site, the company was surprised by the strong response in favor of shipping personal computers with Linux. The PC company then announced that it would offer Ubuntu Linux on select systems, and as of yesterday, they are taking orders. Ubuntu Linux is now available on the XPS 410n high-end desktop system at $849 (compared with $899 for the same machine with Windows installed), the E520n desktop at $599, and the E1505n notebook at $599. | ||

you mean 50 dollars saved for people who are going to buy the system and then put a pirated copy of windows on it. |

From what I understand, $50 is a few bucks over what Dell pays for Vista Basic. It wouldn't surprise me if Dell pays only $50 per license for Vista Premium while the "wee people" System Builders pay $113, or so, from authorized distributors.

| My theory is some user's will buy it because they know Linux others because of the lower price. And some will buy VISTA later when the buy software or a peripheral that has widows drivers only. It may increase the sale of VISTA. I have XP/VISTA on my system will eventually dump XP. I was going to add Ubuntu to my system but because of NTFS I didn't. The instructions were way to complex, perhaps on a secondary PC. For now I'm enjoying VISTA. |

Might want to re-read what you posted: Dell provides hardware support only. Software support is available through Canonical and Linux Community.
