| To me, there is a large divide between "Don't be Evil" and "Don't be Jerks". All the stuff MJ listed seems to me to fall under the Jerk category. The angle of her article is crap too. Even if MS did those things instead of Google, I wouldn't call any of it evil (and you know how fond of MS I am). If Google wants to be a jerk, let them so long as it doesn't affect me. When MS decides to do something evil, it affects everyone because of MS' dominant position in computing. Google has no such dominant position, other than search technologies, so their impact is much smaller. Google has yet to show they're going to be evil with the data they collect, but it wouldn't surprise me if that time is coming soon. Some companies seem to go bad as soon as they go public, and they trot out the old 'maximizing shareholder value' as an excuse for their misdeeds. |

I mean, one could hang out on the couch, suck on Pringles all day and never anger a soul, but they'd never accomplish a dern thing, either. |

Yeah that throwaway, minor position has gotten it's revenues in the billions, making it one of the most powerful companies today. At one point, you could say the same thing except replace Google with Microsoft, and "Search" with "OS". Remember Lotus 1-2-3? Wordperfect? MSOffice was a gleam in Bill's eye. It doesn't matter how "minor" google's dominant position is, they have muscle and money, and that's all it takes. |

| #8: The fact that Google makes a lot of money is irrelevant. They do not have anywhere near the power & control of Microsoft. MS is the dominant player in all of popular computing. Google is the dominant player in a much smaller subset of popular computing. Google cannot dictate anything to the world. Microsoft can. That is the difference. |

#9: The point I think you're missing is that Microsoft was once in this position with a helluva lot less money or power. History begs repeating.
Google owns a niche. That's all it takes. Back when Microsoft was a speck, IBM "was the dominant player in all of popular computing". Google is so powerful, it's a freakin verb: "I googled it." Microsoft has never wielded that kind of power. Don't dismiss it lightly. |
