WinXP beta testers still in open revolt over product activation | |

Microsoft still hasn't been able to sell its Product Activation protection scheme to its own beta testers, judging by some of the recent traffic in the Windows XP private beta newsgroups. Transcripts obtained by The Register indicate continuing hostility (as you might expect from techies), and even seem to signal that the Microsoft staff minding the newsgroups aren't altogether enamoured of the system either. One tester has apparently been thumping a tub (an eminently sensible one) for some time: "I am still imploring you at MS to put a deactivation feature in the OS. That feature alone would make a lot of the people currently unhappy with the activation scheme much happier." | ||

| As a beta tester myself, activation was simple. I clicked "OK"...data sending "data received"...took about 5 seconds. Had I not had an internet connection, I would have just called the 1-800 number to activate. |

| I was talking about this with Julien the other day. Do you know that you CANNOT install Windows on your laptop and your main pc? You can only have it on one main system. You can have Office XP on a laptop and a main system though. For me, I have about 5 main systems I use and only I use. I guess they better send volume licenses to review. |

| This is all totally wrong! This hostility was right whent hey first introduced it! These "transcripts" that Thurrot came up with are from many months ago! Not even the Product Activeation beta newsgroup has things like this, its all questions, and how we feel MS could make it a better experiance. |

| Naah, I would Change one part one day. Next part the next, etc. No Need to change the whole system at once and be aggrevated by this process. And I'm not endorsing this, but there will be "fixes" released on the web to remove this problem as with anything else. ;-) |

| I personally love Microsoft. However, I am a super power user and I spend the majority of my day in front of any number of Windows machines. I just would like to install the software on the computers only I use. If I were MS, I'd do the same damn thing to prevent piracy. Oh well - life will go on :-) |
