Apple's new "Stuffed" commercial pokes fun at preinstalled applications—better known as craplets—loaded up on new Windows PCs. Apple isn't alone in the craplet disdain. Wall Street Journalcolumnist Walt Mossberg wrote columns on April 5 and April 12 about the craplet dilemma.
Mossberg identified two problems: "One is the plethora of teaser software and advertisements for products that must be cleared and uninstalled to make way for your own stuff. The second is the confusing welter of security programs you have to master and update, even on a virgin machine." | ||

Once again, the author proves he knows little about the interaction between a large company, a PC hardware vendor and Microsoft. He states, "the PC is reimaged by the corporation . . ." In fact, we provide our hardware vendor with image(s) and instruct them to ship a PC with such and such hardware and a particular image loaded on to it. If the vendor will not agree to load the image(s) that we specify, we look for another vendor.
So "craplets" are a non issue at most medium to large corporations, period. Meanwhile, for the SOHO buyer, there are several good "decrapifiers" out there that are free to download, install, run, and move on to the "WOW!" |

| This has always been the case! I remember my first Windows 95 PC and the garbage that was loaded on that. I have built my own ever since. |

#1: Why should the user have to spend the effort to find and run a decrapifier? When I buy a new car, it isn't covered in advertising stickers that I have to scrub off.
#2: That's not a good justification for why they do it but I doubt it will ever change. The new box I just picked up was loaded with a few craplets but not too bad. |

#3 Money. Advertisers pay to have their applications added to the PC image. This allows Dell to sell you a new PC for less money. Intel pays Dell to put "Intel Inside" stickers on the outside too.
This one of the reasons Dell doesn't sell you a PC with a blank hard drive for the same price as a Windows PC minus the cost of Windows. |

Wasn't there a recent news item about someone from Microsoft that said how they were thrilled that they got Michael Dell to commit to offering Vista machines with the option of "no craplets?"
Meanwhile, I heard from our Dell rep that since Michael is back in charge, he is really cleaning house. They need it. |

#4 I'm aware of why they do it. I just wish I had the option to pay $30-40 more to get a clean install. Or even a blank hard disk, but I took care of tha myself in a few seconds.
#5: Of course MS would be happy with less pre-installed crap. If any of the craplets takes a dive, MS gets the blame. They would also be happy if the user only saw wall-to-wall Microsoft without being distratced by 3rd-party offeres and trialware. |

| There is little or nothing Microsoft can do about this. If they tried to mandate "no craplets", they would get sued. |
