Banks Starting to Look to Microsoft Vista | |

In February, Microsoft launched its much-anticipated Vista operating system (OS). According to the company, the successor to Windows XP sports several new features that are designed to increase productivity for Microsoft's clients -- including, of course, banks. "XP [which was released in 2001] is pretty widely deployed in banks, from the lending side to product management, even in the back office," says Greg Haislip, managing director, banking, at Microsoft. "Vista will take over this role," he contends. However, there isn't a "financial services" version of Vista per se, Haislip notes, adding that Vista is a horizontal platform common across Microsoft's footprint. Still, there are certain aspects of the OS that bankers can exploit to help improve their operations, specifically around security, mobile computing and search. For example, baked into Vista is encryption technology that leverages Microsoft's BitLocker solution. The OS can store centralized keys so users won't need to rebuild them if the data or hardware is compromised. | ||

| From what I've seen, they could be using Windows for Workgroups just as effectively. All MS is in this case is a front-end to a server-based app. I went in to renew my mortgage 2 months ago. The bank guy was using an IBM system (natch) running Windows 2000 as the base OS for a text-based DOS app. The DOS app ran all the tables and crunched all the numbers. Why they needed Windows for that was a mystery to me. Now they need Vista to run the DOS app? |

DOS app? Very funny.
More than likely it was running a 24 line app on a minicomputer such as AIX or VMS. My bank runs a combination of Windows software as well as a terminal emulator linked up to a VMS app ... I think written in Powerhouse. |

| #3, IE7 in Vista is and always will be more secure than Firefox, and for the simple fact that the IE process is completely isolated from the rest of the system, so a vulnerability in IE can not effect anything other than IE itself. |
