RealNetworks Says Targeted by Microsoft as Threat | |

Computer video and audio software company RealNetworks Inc on Wednesday accused Microsoft Corp of seeking to restrict its products because they posed a threat to the software giant's dominant Windows operating system. RealNetworks Vice President David Richards in written testimony to U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said that as recently as August 2001 a senior Microsoft executive had confirmed that RealNetworks was seen as a threat. Richards said Microsoft withheld technical data from RealNetworks to ensure that RealNetworks' audio and video player would not work as well with Microsoft's Windows operating system as the Windows Media Player. | ||

Real is definately a classic case of a company afraid of competition. While granted Real was one of the first entries into this market, their pricing structure was exhorbitant and prevented a lot of people from being able to use the technology to stream audio and video.
I see Microsoft having entered that market because they felt the technology was signifigant enough that many people should have the opportunity to utilize it. One of the key things that has been hurting Real is their design to not just build the technology, but to also control the content flowing through it. They've lost several contracts to content suppliers because of their insistence that the Real logo display more prominently than that of the creator. Real has some problems, I think they have a poor business model and they are executing inefficiently, which has opened up plenty of room for competition. They should also be watching Quicktime, as it's had some signifigant wins as well against them. |

Ok... please excuse whatever I'm about to say, because I've had a bottle of wine in about 30 minutes. (Really good wine... )... anyway
Let me recount a quick story regarding Real. Real accused Microsoft of specifically breaking RealPlayer in Windows to further Windows Media Player. Real said that Microsoft wrote code in the Windows API that basically detected that RealPlayer was trying to run, and did various things to break it. This was a major issue during the anti-trust trial, and the DOJ lawyers made a pretty big deal about it. So, what was the truth? Turns out that the player Real was talking about was as poorly written BETA copy of RealPlayer, and it had multiple errors in it that caused the errors experience by testers of the beta product. So, it turns out that Real caused the Windows incompatibilities... not Microsoft. Now, I'm sure many of you heard the first part of that story... that Microsoft had code in Windows that crippled RealPlayer. How many of you also heard that it was Real's fault, and not Microsoft... Hence the reason I'm often Pro-Microsoft. I like picking the underdog... as ironic as that sounds. Hope that made sense.... I think I'm about to pass out. |

I often remember that story, RMD, to remind me of just how pathetic some of MS' competitors are. Another good one is how Netscape's Andressen used to try to get people to believe that MS wrote Windows so that non-Microsoft software would never perform as well as MS software, and this was why Netscape sucked. When the thing with Real happened, I knew it was a take off of the Netscape FUD, and it was later proven.
I always wonder how some people can believe this crap. If Windows only runs MS software best, why have John Carmack and Tim Sweeney never complained? After all, their apps often demand more of Windows than normal desktop apps, except when those desktop apps are badly coded and hog memory, cause system instabillity, are dependant upon antiquated, proprietary, poorly coded/tested components instead of using standard APIs (e.g., AOL). Funny how Netscape takes longer to execute than Quake 3. |

#35 - I just hate the way real tries to take over your system, and the way its interface is 99% ads.
I also hate the poor movie quality of all but the bulkiest RM's. |
