Anyone that has an inkling of what a technology entrepreneur does... will understand what msft is doing. They are PUSHING forward, albeit without a master blueprint of strategy in mind. Sometimes, that is simply the best thing to do. Strategy will come later, but the costs of doing NOTHING outweigh the costs of in imperfect strategy on day 1.
msft routinely goes through a phase like this. Look at their OS business? All manner of strategy shifts in the early days (OS/2 anyone?).
Also worth noting, is that msft has the financial resources to allow them to work like this. For the rest of us... we are forced (by our bank accounts) to be more conservative in our ambitions.
