Windows Home Server: Beta 2 Is Go! | |

Good news! Windows Home Server has reached the Beta 2 milestone! While previous releases have been tested by 1000+ Microsoft employees and some of our hardware and software partners, we are now starting to invite a broader group of external testers to participate in Beta 2. People that are interested in participating in Beta 2 can register here so we have their names as we steadily expand the program. We can't guarantee you'll be invited to participate right away (or at all), but if you're interested get yourself registered. Keep in mind that Beta 2 does not really represent the "consumer experience." Most consumers will ultimately buy Home Server as an integrated hardware/software solution that's very plug and play, e.g. the HP MediaSmart Server. Beta 2 is software only, of course, meaning evaluators will need to know how to install and configure a server operating system. | ||

| I find MS's entire approach to a home server bizarre. Are they trying to freeze out the little OEMs? Why even mention an H-P product for unfinished software? As a small OEM I find this mention of H-P terribly annoying. |

bobsireno, i think they've been clear that the launch product, thus this testing, is exclusive to HP. But the product will be open to OEMs thereafter.
TechLarry, I've noticed that question on other betas from Microsoft. I assume its meant to capture "i loved it" blurbs should they need them later. But perhaps its to also capture "9 out of 10 beta testers said they'd recommend it to a friend". |

It will take a lot to move me away from things like my wonderful little QNAP TS-201 NAS Box.
File Server. FTP Server. Web Server. UPnP Server. TwonkyServer. Built-in Bit-Torrent (not that I use it much). All in a box 1/2 the size of a shoe-box, and uses about as much power as a light bulb. If they make it 'easy' to the point they did the Backup program in Vista Ultimate then heaven help us. TL |

#4, TL, I'm confused. What was so hard about the backup in Windows Vista - I did a full system image on my machines and it took a few clicks in a simple wizard and it was done. It had to have been about the easiest backup/image I've ever created and it was fast, too.
Maybe I need to look deeper into Vista's backup and restore features and see what you mean - like more granular selections or something. I just don't know what you mean. Thanks. L |

#4 D-Link has the DNS-323 that looks good.

You missed my point, then stated exactly what I meant. That was weird LOL My problem with the backup program in VISTA is just that. You have NO control over it. Hell, you can't even tell WHAT it is backing up. It's backup store is a billion little cryptically-named ZIP files. And you cannot choose what files to back up. Hell, you can't even choose a FOLDER to store your backup in. You can only choose the volume. The application is entirely too weak. TL |

I might try one of those next. I have a Raid-5 1.8 Terabyte server in my home office, along with the QNAP NAS box (which has two 320MB Seagate Perp drives in it). It's running on a 2.53Ghz Intel P4 system under Server 2K3 Enterprise and a 3Ware 9500-8 RAID board. Actually, it's a 1TB after you figure parity overhead, and the fact that I have one of the 300GB drives set aside as an online hot-spare. Anyway, want to dismantle that server and put the drives in a NAS box. I'm tired of managing it, keeping it updated, etc... I've come to love the simplicity of a nice, Linux-based NAS box :) Not to mention they use a HELL of a lot less power. TL |
