Playstation 2 surpasses Playstation 3 in weekly sales | |

Sony's Playstation 3 may be setting its sights on Nintendo's Wii in the continuing next-gen console war, but a new competitor has emerged to challenge the cell processor-powered behemoth: Sony's very own Playstation 2. The venerable last-gen console outsold its heir by nearly one thousand units in Japan for the week of January 22-28, racking up 20,955 purchases versus the Playstation 3's 19,996 - according to digital entertainment analyst Media Create. | ||

Really not fair to compare the two. A $100 ps2 isn't competing for the same customers as the $600 ps3.
But the inconsistencies run deeper, as its very common to see the DS (an inexpensive handheld) compared to full consoles (which are obviously more expensive). Seems like a better measure would be "total sales dollars", rather than simply "units sold". |

| This isn't a surprise. PS2 is projected to outsell all consoles until 2009. It is expected to generate between hardware sales and royalties from game makers at least $1.8B a year till 2010. PS2 profits is what allows Sony to sell PS3 below cost. |

| #2, your projections is getting a dose of reality! the Wi is beating the PS3 in sales. And I don't thinkt that the PS2 is generating enough to off a possible ps3 price reduction |

And the 360 is beating the PS3 in sales.
Wii is beating the PS3 by a 4:1 ratio in fact. Xbox 360 sales are UP in Japan, and PS3 sales are down for the third week in a row in Japan, even though they have stock piles of them. |

#4, Have you seen where Sony is sponsoring $100.00 off rebate coupons for PS3's? The coupons do have requirements - some kind of bundled return of Ps2 games, controllers, etc... to prove, I gusess, that the recipient has a PS2...
The sales guys at the local Game Stop store I shop at for my boys stated that they were having real trouble selling the PS3 and that games [in their words], for the Wii, "suck." I tell you, I came away from that place with a very deep respect for modern gamers - these guys discuss every detail of the experience and each interdependent perspective. I remembered so fondly when PC guys used to have the same passion and understanding of their systems and the objectivity to discuss them so well. That is fading in the space - as I left, I couldn't help but think that Xbox 360's success and the success of the console in general, were going to hurt Vista - so much energy and passion moved to the gaming consoles, it seems.
