As Microsoft Corp. gets ready to launch Windows Vista and Office 2007 to consumers, it claims a formidable new foe it lacked at its last major consumer software launch five years ago: the popular filesharing network known as BitTorrent. This third-generation peer-to-peer (P2P) service, already used by tens of millions of Internet users to swap digital music and movies for free, is becoming a popular mechanism for those looking to obtain pirated software. "Any software that is commercially available is available on BitTorrent," according to Mark Ishikawa, CEO of BayTSP Inc., a Los Gatos, Calif., antipiracy consulting firm. | ||

I've been a Microsoft MCSE and Action Pack subscriber for 5 years. I dutifully pay for every single copy of Microsoft software I use or install. What is my reward? Microsoft bundles Vista Business only with Action Pack, so for me to even become proficient with all of Vista's new features, I have to go out and spend another $400 for a single copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (or pay $199 at NewEgg for an OEM version).
I have never before considered pirating Microsoft products. I've never needed to. Action Pack was exactly the cure for people like me: Microsoft evangelists who invested time, effort and money into obtaining certifications and who recommend, sell or support Microsoft products to others. But I have to honestly say that I will consider using pirated Vista Ultimate if/when someone cracks the DRM. And if that means I have to re-image my 5 PC's every 90 days, well that's a 20-minute process that affords numerous benefits beyond the resetting of any time-out code. |

| Mark, the DVD you have contains every edition. Run install without a key, choose Ultimate, and you'll have 30 days to live with Ultimate and become familiar with the scant few extra features it has over Business. You can do that however many times you need, even in a VM. |
