Microsoft to support consumer versions of XP through 2014 | |

Microsoft is now providing five years of "mainstream" support, plus five years of "extended support" for XP Media Center and XP Home Edition. Previously, Microsoft provided no extended support for the consumer versions of its XP operating system. Consequently, consumer versions of XP are now covered under mainstream support through April 2009, and under extended support through April 2014. | ||

Ok - now, every guy who held out that XP was being dumped and all users would be forced to pay Microsoft an OS tax and upgrade to Vista, please now start posting, speaking and sharing the truth that anyone not living "in" not "under" a rock for the last 30 years already knew...namely, Microsoft does support its customers and the products they build and that they do this more consistently and for far longer than anyone else.
Oh... one last item... I love strategies like that reflected in this notice... "Microsoft is telling its customers that they will upgrade to Windows Vista BECAUSE THEY WILL WANT TO - not because they will have to. That is the real message here - and as bold as any I have seen. Microsoft is expressing its confidence in the new Operating System and Office 2007 - knowing that in every way, they are THAT MUCH BETTER, that people will want them and buy them. Ya'll remember what President Roosevelt announced at the Casablanca Conference in 1942? In a breath, he announced before all the world that only "Unconditional Surrender" would be acceptable to the allies. In that one breath, our President put the world and our enemies on notice that the allies not only would win the war, but that they WERE winning the war. As propaganda [marketing], it was masterful. BTW, it was the Nazi's propaganda Minister, Joseph Goebbels who first took note of the significance of the President's proclamation - even Prime Minister Churchill was stunned and Stalin, well... the record shows he was furious. It didn't matter... Roosevelt was right and in the best way one can be - they say it is so, and then they make it so. That is my added point here and what I love about Microsoft, companies like them and the men and women that work with me.... They dare to do daring things and make so what is not yet so. Once again, Microsoft has done the same thing - saying in one proclamation, "You'll want Vista, because we're going to make the experience so good and the possibilities so rich, that you won't be satisfied with less..." 2009 will be here sooner than expected...
I still use Windows 2000 Pro and Office 2000 on my main home computer. I do have two other computers at home running XP and Office 2000. Two OS versions and 3 or 4 office app versions later, I still see no reason to upgrade other than to help my MSFT shares. |

#3, going along with that thinking you will never need to upgrade from that 1974 Cadillac.
The speed limit hasn't changed and the price of a new car will be more than gas/tune ups for the current car. and yes 8 track tape decks will be coming back. |

The question is, will the level of support provided be sufficient to keep people on XP, or to force them to Vista.
This is just one piece of the puzzle. I'll wait to see how it REALLY shakes out. TL |

| It would be really nice then if MS would put together a a new Service Pack for XP that rolled up all these patches since SP2. We will be using XP for a while longer in my office (certain programs are not yet compatible with Vista), and I know others who will stick with XP a bit longer who would also appreciate this. |

| Tech Larry: Microsoft forces no one to upgrade to a new OS. It is the customer's choice. I still occationally see customers with PCs running Windows 95. If their PC is dead and not worth fixing, as the cost of repair far exceeds to value of the old PC, they still are not forced to upgrade. They get the latest version of Windows on the new PC because thats what is preinstalled. We're putting Vista Home Premium on all of our new consumer PC's. None of the people buying the PC from us are being forced to use Vista when they receive it next week. They will use it becase it is preinstalled. Also, we will install XP for them if desired at the time of ordering. There aren't many XP takers. |
