Microsoft racked up the largest number of global acquisitions in 2006 with 14 takeovers. Oracle and KPN were placed joint second, with 13 acquisitions apiece, and IBM came in fourth with 12 buyouts, according to consultant Icon Corporate Finance. Among Microsoft's acquisitions were Canadian asset-tracking company AssetMetrix and a reported US$75 million deal for remote-access and firewall company Whale Communications. | ||

"takeover" isn't the right word to use here - the companies and their property were offered for sale and "purchased" by Microsoft. There are some basic events that result in the equity business owners actualize - some are good and some are bad. A company can sell and its shares as held by the owners [founders, principals and other shareholders], get a nice return.
Companies can go public, which has some risks, but the return can be even greater, or they can go under [that's the bad kind of event]. In the cases listed as acquisitions, the events are all good for the shareholders of the private companies being purchased. Microsoft didn't come in and beat them over the head and take them over - though those holding minority shares, may not have enough say to prevent a sale [provided they weren't in agreement in the first place]. |

they need to take over more game studios. The xbox 360 game library is severly lacking. Once you get past gears of wars there is nothing else.

#4--have you seen Lost Planet? I'm not much of a gamer, but I saw some kids playing this in Best Buy this weekend, and I had to ask what it was. The graphics are amazing. Not that it means it's also fun, but....
I'm pretty excited about the Whale acquisition--SSL VPN is something ISA sorely needs built-in. |

#5, Totally agree on ISA - BTW, have you seen SMB over 443 in R2? I assess, as I started posting about it in 2004, that complete transparency and true virtualization of the named space is just around the corner - I cannot wait for Longhorn Server and SP1 for Vista - this is going to be perhaps the most exciting year we have ever seen.
Add a little home server on one end, bridge all people via SSL/SMB, manage it all with SCE and turn the devs loose to build some amazing apps to run on it all. Sorry to divert, but that is only on the surface - multi-player and multi-platform gaming is but one of the things one can do on such networks - why not game amongst PS3, Xbox 360 and PC gamers all at once - the world is plenty big enough for all of us. |

| #6--I haven't looked into that much; it wouldn't really help us, as we use a 3rd party document management system. They have a pretty portal/extranet offering, but unfortunately they have a horrid licensing scheme that makes it almost useless. |

#8--the client/server piece is quite good (especially the server side, which is rock-solid), actually--it's much better than SharePoint for what it does (for us), though comparing it to SharePoint is comparing apples and oranges. It has its quirks (like any product), but with the current version we're using, we're very happy with it. It's just the portal piece that isn't very good.
I should add--a DMS is far, far better than using folder shares, especially when it comes to compliance/records retention issues. This post was edited by bluvg on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 15:31. |
