Well hell, when you word the State's settlement in that way it actually doesn't seem half bad. The only piece I have a complaint with is forcing distribution of the IE source code. Don't see the point since IE is a component anybody can use royalty free.
But they forgot the part about forcing Microsoft to ship Sun's Java with Windows and other pieces written up by competitors. This post was edited by sodablue on Sunday, March 17, 2002 at 15:36. |

On the modular thing, I guess it depends on what they mean "remove entirely". For instance with Internet Explorer, that's foolhardy. But if it means leaving the HTML rendering engine, and removing iexplore.exe then ok. I certainly agree that XP should have install options to not include Messenger, Media player, Outlook Express, etc.
The uniform terms licensing thing isn't bad, and even being prohibited from exclusive deals is not so bad. But I guess my point was partly that there is more to the state's remedy than what is detailed in this article. |

what a shame that a great American company is not allowed to plan their own product. Government is now telling us how our computer is configured. DO YOU ALL REALIZE THIS?
If you want to see what government intervention/regulation leads to... just think about our pathetic public school system or even the telecom industry. And WE (those of us who make technology our profession) are asking for this regulation in our industry. We deserve what we get. |

I do have to agree that a large reason for the Tech recession is the anti-trust trial against Microsoft. It's resulted in a great amount of uncertainty in the market place which is bad.
This isn't to say it is the entire reason. The dot-com over-exuberance played a large part as well, but at least that was expected as the fundamentals just weren't there. I just think our stocks in the blue-chip techs(Dell, Oracle, Cisco, etc.) would be doing better if this trial was over and everybody could focus on the future. |

All this story is gone too fart. These States pushing to obtain what MS competitor and not comsumers want is a shame for a free and democratic society. Things like remind me the Russia system in the 50s and 60s and we akk know hoew it ended, I don't live in any of the Lobbyst states but if I did I would have already a list of people not to vote. It is a scandal that taxpayer money is used to push private interests coming from ill managed companies to kill a succesfull one.

mooresa56 is right. We should be very scared if the government can start saying what features products can have. Sun, Oracle don't care because they never add any features. This should scare any software company especially. It brings a new option to the courts when deciding a punishment and it also gives that option precedence.
I personally feel that the deal should put operating restrictions (as far was license and distribution agreements) on MS or at least allow the DOJ to approve or hear complaints about these agreements when they are in negotiation. But making MS make different versions of windows... jesus. MS should (and would be justified) to charge more because it is going to cost them more to create the dumb downed version. The sad thing is the ONLY way to get rid of MS's monopoly is to force consumers to use something else. They don't want linux, and I see why. It works fine for computer nerds/enthusiasts. It is years from being ready for a Mom. I agree MS did stuff wrong... they are no longer doing it... they should be punished without forcing them to publish source code which took years of R&D (and billions of $) to create or be forced to produce an inferior product just to get some lawyers and competitors' rocks off. This whole case scares me. And it should scare everybody else, including linux enthusiasts. Note: I can't spell enthusiasts. |
