Windows Vista, the new computer operating system that Microsoft Corp. is touting as its most secure ever, contains a programming flaw that might let hackers gain full control of vulnerable computers. Microsoft and independent security researchers, however, tried to play down the risk from the flaw, which was posted on a Russian site recently and is apparently the first affecting the new Vista system released to larger businesses in late November. | ||

Your logic escapes me. Exactly how is Vista represemtative of all other OSes, past, present, or future, to the point of being a predictive model? |

I think his point is this: "Windows Vista, the new computer operating system that Microsoft Corp. is touting as its most secure ever..." Even though it is "the most secure ever", ANY OS can be hacked or broken into. There is no such thing as a perfectly secure OS. Even if you are not connected to the internet (some people's idea of security), you can get viruses from floppies, CD's, flash drives, etc. Or a malicious person with physical access can do something to the system. "Just goes to prove any OS is vulnerable.. " No problem with his statement or logic. Not predictive/representative of other OS's, just a statement of fact. |

| Looks like this story is feeding off of the story in the NYT, which stumbles badly as it attempts to include Vista among those OSes affected. It will be interesting to see this play out and if it will prove to be valid in the context represented. |

wow, you mean that if someone is sitting in front of your computer that your security maybe compromised? BRILLIANT

#6 I do appreaciate the honesty of the F-Secure spokesman which seems significantly less histrionic than the stuff McAfee and Symantec has been putting out.
""The bottom line is you couldn't use a vulnerability like this to write a worm or hack a Vista system remotely," Mr. Hypponen said Tuesday. "It only has historical significance in that it's the first reported vulnerability that also affects Vista. It's a nonevent in other ways." Attackers with low-level access privileges on a vulnerable machine could theoretically use the flaw to bump up their status, ultimately gaining systemwide control, Mr. Hypponen said." |

I agree with #7.
The problem, as I see it, is users have too many passwords to remember, thus causing them to use weak passwords or store them insecurely. Personally, I have over 30 passwords to remember. TL |
