What if you could rig it so that competing with your flagship product was against the law? Under 1998's Digital Millennium Copyright Act, breaking an anti-copying system is illegal, even if you're breaking it for a legal reason. For example, it's against the law to compete head-on with the iPod by making a device that plays Apple's proprietary music, or by making an iPod add-on that plays your own proprietary music. Nice deal for Apple. Microsoft gets the same deal, courtesy of something called "Information Rights Management," a use-restriction system for Office files, such as Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel spreadsheets. This article seems like a partial rehash of an article I've seen before (probably around the release of Office 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2) and is pure FUD. For starters, IRM/RMS does not use the TPM. The only feature of Vista/Windows Server "Longhorn" to (optionally) use the TPM is BitLocker, which will hopefully see wide adoption to keep data on stolen laptops secure. IRM/RMS uses the users credentials (Passport, AD, etc.) to secure the document. Next, the creator/owner of the secured documents is not locked-in. They can create unsecured copies of the documents whenever they want, or create an unsecured document in the first place. Last (there's probably more, but I'll end here), Though useful on occassion, this isn't a feature average users will often use (see last 3 years for reference) and is something that's likely to be controlled by policy based on the type of information a user or department handles, so there's little concern of "naive users pull[ing] the "security" slider in Office all the way over the right."
This isn't about Microsoft controlling the user's data. It's about the user being able to control who he wants to have access to his data. He is the one who enables this security, not Microsoft. |

| I have to agree with n4cer. As long as this is an optional feature, I can't see the problem. If you personally don't like it, don't turn it on. If you don't know what you are doing, you turn it on at your own risk. But it is available for those who want this level of document security. Andif someone wanted to convert all these documents to a non-protected form, I'm sure it would not be hard for a VBScript guru to write a script that loads all the documents in a folder or tree, and then saves them to a new path without the protection turned on. If you work for the company that created the document, you would probably be given the necessary permissions to do this, so that is not a barrier to accomplishing this. |
