Royal Philips Electronics, LG Electronics, Tatung and Trigem will join ViewSonic, NEC, Fujitsu Panasonic and a host of contract manufacturers in line to participate in the development of Mira, a lightweight device with an integrated flat-panel screen for remotely reading Internet content. Unlike many other Web tablets, Mira actually doesn't function as an independent computer. Instead, it effectively relays data and commands back and forth from a PC via an 802.11 wireless network and Windows CE.Net, the latest version of CE. Letting the PC do most of the heavy lifting saves on battery life. | ||

Mira and TabletPC are too separate things. Mira is pretty much a thin client that recieves all its data from your Mira Server (or your PC). It allows you mobility throughout your wireless network and still do the same things normally just reserved for sitting at the PC. Notebooks are limited in that they require more battery life, can be heavy, and really are a pain in the butt to work with (if you don't have an external mouse, and the keyboards are just always so bad). Mira is meant to make your PC a hub for everything, it streams internet content, your music, applications, everything. TabletPC is actually a full fledge PC. It's a notebook in the form of a legal notepad. But it allows so much more... I actually test the TabletPC SDK, and let me just say this, the handwriting recognition is magnificent, MANY MANY MANY times over better than what is available on PocketPC 2002. You just have to see it to know how good it actually is. I think once people realize how much better the TabletPC formfactor is over the notebook formfactor, it will start to dominate that area of the market. |

#1 The market for Mira would be anyone who is interested in getting an LCD flat-panel monitor for their PC. One form of the Mira can function as your main computer monitor. Then when you don't want to be sitting at your computer, but still get work done, just pick up your monitor and take it with you.

The device isn't just about the internet. It's about doing whatever you normally do at your PC, except maybe bleeding edge 3D games, remotely.
One use I could definitely see for Mira is reading long documents (try reading the C# Language Spec while sitting at your PC) or eBooks or even IM. Lots of people would find convienience in being able to use the computer in a more relaxed environment, with a screen they could hold in their hands, rather than having to sit at a desk for hours. It would also be great in an office setting. You could have access to the capabillities of your desktop in meetings, or wherever you go in the building. You could probably even remotely admin a server with something that's easier to carry around than a laptop. Of course, you can also do this with a PocketPC, but with Mira, you have a larger screen.
