Allchin Backs Off Antivirus Remarks | |

Outgoing Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin posted a blog entry Friday apologizing for the confusion surrounding comments he made to reporters Wednesday about being so confident in Windows Vista's security that his seven-year-old son's PC had no antivirus software installed. The remarks came in response to a question about his relative level of confidence that Vista would be more secure than Windows XP SP2. Allchin replied by explaining that Vista includes key security features that could not be added to XP, using his son as an example. | ||

| Vista is better than XP, more secure, and capable of being “safe” as long as the user is Limited, without elevated privileges. MS management is conditioned to produce hyperbole about their products. Only reporters that have little to no critical thinking ability would run with what Allchin said without seeking further clarification. |

Before anyone comments on this, I'd strongly recommend listening to his actual words, available here:
(800) 677-2488 This is at best a case of reporting on reporting, and at worst a deliberate misinterpretation. No one who heard that actual interview would have made such a comment. These aren't garden-variety journalists listening to this--they cover tech for a living, and there is no excuse for this. |

I listened to the recording, after skipping the intro. Allchin walks a tightrope when stating how superior Vista is and when asked is XP SP2 not good enough, to paraphrase, he states that it is as good as they could make it. An acceptable answer.
Bottom line is that Allchin makes a good case for moving to Vista as soon as possible. bluvg: Reporting on reporting is fine as long as the same information that was available to the original reporter is passed along in the second report. I still believe that only a numbskull without critical thinking ability would report on what their mind filtered from the original report and if so, whether it was deliberate or not. If so, then it was spin. If not, it was poor reporting at best. Thanks for the phone number! |
