Will Office 2007 get a 'kill switch,' too? | |

Microsoft all but admitted earlier this month that the company is building a “kill switch” into Windows Vista, as part of its strategy to lock down Vista with Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA). While officials haven’t conceded that they are planning to do the same with Office 2007, it sure sounds like that is the intent. | ||

#1, Ditto that - I am always amazed when other devs do not recognize how fundamentally important it is to protect one's work.
#2, I am not so sure of that - when people speak of Office in the editorials, they always speak of such basic functions and not at all how we see people use Office - our customers, which is all I can speak to, use MS Office as a client to a much larger, more distributed and collaborative world - where Sharepoint technologies are used to create working spaces where not just documents, but really sophisticated business and marketing intelligence product is delivered using SQL Server Reporting Services and commerical controls for it from Dundas - just amazingly fun and productive spaces to build and they really help people get more done. That environment is extended to easily include presence awareness and communications of all types - voice, sharing, corporate IM, and conferencing. This is especially true of the professional verticals - legal, accounting, surveying, engineering, etc... that make up our base. So Office 2007 really extends this and accomodates critical areas now more important than ever - these being compliance, repositories that reflect these needs and KB 0 or Knowledge Management - perhaps ironically here, the leak down of company information and IP - good KB helps prevent that. By all this I mean that there is so much more to Office than the bits people describe over at eWeek, CNET and elsewhere - and none of what I have touched on requires that a user know any more than the 10% of office they already do, or likely will. It does speak to all the "Hybrid" types of very democratic business networks coming online. In our case, we were veyr fortunate and that we invested in the ability to build, host and support these types of environments going back some 7 years now [So I'm likely really biased, but one does have to be to make it work]. That said, I have seen the companies supported this way grow like crazy - they're just more efficient and agile and able to get more done for less cost. |

Everyone's opinion is valid. However, since I work on PCs I find the constant need to call India for the new set of 54 numbers a pain in the rear for me and an added expense for my customers, who pay an extra $6 to $8 for the activation from the other side of the world.
I appreciate the need to eliminate piracy, but don't like the process MS uses. There must be a better way for reactivation on the same machine when viruses and rootkits devour a normal and legal Windows installation. I see nothing but added problems with MS support in the near future when working on infected Vista PCs. I don't trust their software to always and accurately determine that a reinstall is legal, in spite of their assurances. My paranoia is based on experience with MS, a company that can be great, but can't be trusted to be so. |
