TL, "Mark" your machine - create a restore point and restart - create another restore point and reboot again. Then install WMP 11. Follow this pattern for any install. If any install tanks your system, simply use the first of the two points to restore your machine. I have never seen a system fail - no matter how jacked an install went, that was managed by a user in this way.
Also, if your machine ever does become so unstable that you cannot fix it, go into the recovery console and "IF" necessary, perform a parallel install - and even in cases where your system is so hosed that it cannot find a suitable location, or it cannot read files from say an optical drive, hit a Shift+F10 and a command console will open durning the install process and allow you to specify where to read from. Again, I have never seen a Windows system that was hosed logically, that could not be recovered. Once done with a repair, or parallel install, perform all your updates and remove old the version(s) from the boot.ini file and you'll be all set. It can save you many painful and frustrating hours.
So far, WMP 11 has been just fine - though many are howling over DRM - in general
